Question Baby fox?

Does this sound like a baby fox to you? I heard it crying in the middle of the night last night, kept waking me up. We keep seeing 2 baby foxes up the road at night, bouncing around & playing. Wonder if the mother got killed?

That sounds like a hungry/scared kitten to me, personally, but then again...I've never heard a baby fox.

A quick search brought up this site with lots of different fox sounds

I would have said it was a kitten too, till I listened to a few of these, it may well be a baby fox!

That's exactly what it is. It might not just be babies, it could be the mother calling to them too.

I used to do some work rehabilitating young foxes for release into the wildlife reserves here, they make noises just like that for locating each other and often when they are playing. They also make that noise when the babies are being weaned off milk and calling for their mother (or their caretaker) trying to persuade her to give them milk and she refuses. The kits get very vocal about it when she rejects them for milk. They make a lot of other noises too but that sound is typical of both babies and adults.

Definitely sounds like a fox to me. They could have just been playing, though. I've seen a young one do that before and it's brother (or sister) came running up. Then they started wrestling. I didn't see the mama, but I'm assuming if their mama got killed, they wouldn't be playing.

Well they weren't crying last night, thank goodness, sounded so pitiful! Their den is right up the road near a chicken coop that is on the main drag of the town.I see then nearly every night after dark in my headlights, rolling all around playing.Wondering if the owner may have caught the mother going for chicken dinner??

Fox. Just now when I listened to it all my dogs jumped up and ran outside. I think they thought the sound was coming from the yard!
