U.S.A.A. clients petition
If any of you reading this are U.S.A.A. clients you might want to go to their home page and take a look at the petition that they're asking all of their clients to sign.

Wife got the email and said it goes to show how BAD the bills are. USAA never sends out stuff like this.

I am a USAA customer and I say SIGN!!!!!! The great rates and even greater service I get from USAA is incomparable to anything. I got the email, and YES, it was a shocker and a true exclamation point on how dire the issue is.

Are these products available to veterans? Any mortgage other than a VA loan?

Joshie,
USAA only requires prior service for "membership". And membership has it's priviledges! My combined auto + property insurance is literally 1/3 what it was quoted at Allstate or Farmer's. And yes, as a member, you could get a better rate on ANY loan, not just a VA loan (although I highly reccommend the VA guaranteed home loan product: no money down and better underwriting)

been a usaa member for going on 30 years now. they used to be only available to officers. but opened up a few years back to any service personell . If any of you are ex military and reading this and not a member, you should check them out for your homeowners and car insurancee. best rates I have found bar none, and as a member owned company they will divy up company profits at year end and you will usually be getting a check back from them.

They have really, really loosened up their restrictions. I think for USAA bank there are now none at all. I saw an ad for USAA bank on top of the wal mart/murrphy oil gasoline pump the other day.
When we first started you had to be commissioned officer. I'm not sure of the order but I think it went. . . they started to offered it to WOs, then they opened it up to any service member and then the children of all of those.

I applied before but wasn't qualified , But I noticed over on www.CreditBoards.com they have been talking about USAA relaxing the requirements that You No longer have to be Retired " served 20 yrs. + etc . " from the armed services to join , just to be honorably discharged . As everyone can sell car insurance here in Mass. starting in 2010 , I just ran the numbers and they are $ 50. cheaper on My truck ins. and $ 100 on our car .
I guess I will have look into signing up .
Plus all the good comments about there credit cards

I just sent the link to my hubby. He served in the Air Force for four years between the Korean War and Vietnam. Has anyone been able to get USAA loans for acreage? VA loan? I can't remember if he's already had a VA loan. Can you get only one of those in a lifetime?

I've been a customer since about 1988, back when I was an ROTC Midshipman, but I'm not signing. I think the banks need to be kept under enough control that we don't have another meltdown like a couple years ago. So the USAA management is whining. I don't care. I don't do a lot of banking with them. Mostly it's just my car insurance. They won't even do farm insurance. After the way banks have screwed up, I'm not that sympathetic.

Absolutely not! You can re-use your VA home Loan Guarantee over and over as long as the first one was paid in full. You can use it to buy land and build, and then if you ever sell the place, you get you benefit back to go buy something new. It's awesome.

I have never had any issues with USAA. They are a member owned company that really does serve it's members.
In reply to Dan, sorry you feel that way, but USAA is not the one who caused any of this problem. It is the huge banks, JP Morgan Goldman, etc who caused the problem with their short positions.
Check this link out.
E-mails show Goldman boasting as meltdown unfolds
And vote against any of your Congress critters who bailed them out. I'd like to see convictions on all the Federal Reserve Board presidents, and Sec Treas to boot.

USAA has an outstanding bank- free (or refund of fees) ATM use if direct deposit to account, no fees for overseas ATM use. We've been there since 1989, and my mom joined just for bank (open to all). It is great keeping our main checking account through all our moves, to be on check #2900 or whatever instead of our 15th bank account and check #200 again, etc. And I can use any ATM, don't have to find "my" bank, although I try to use one with lower fees to make more profits to be repaid to us all!
Now honorably discharged enlisted can enroll as well for insurance etc. I figure our insured members are a bit better risk than the general population, and we own it mutually so any profits go to us. In fact every year (maybe not Katrina year?) we get a check refunding a good portion of our insurance costs to us.

Corporations should not get to pick and chose which regulations cover them. Corporations should not ask their customers to lobby Congress to help them avoid regulation.
USAA is a commercial bank, an insurer and an investment firm. If USAA wants to continue to be a commercial bank, an insurer and an investment firm then it should be prepared to conform to the Federal regulations that cover all of those industries. If USAA doesn't want to be regulated in such a manner then it can change its corporate structure
USAA Bank is regulated by the Federal Office of Thrift Supervision. USAA customer accounts are insured by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) which means if USAA screws up FDIC will pony up the money to pay off their customers. Where does the FDIC get money? FDIC gets some money from assessments on insured banks, but it gets half of its income from Government securities plus it can borrow up to $3 billion dollars from the US Treasury at any time.
USAA may have played it safe in the past and not made risky investments, but that doesn't mean they get to make their own rules. As long as the USAA accounts are insured by the FDIC (which are backed by the Federal Treasury) then USAA play by the rules, including the Volcker Rule.
I can bet I will be calling my senators about this on Monday.

The point is that it has NOT become law yet. There is certainly time for them to fix it. Since USAA is a member owned company, they certainly have the right to remove the Volker amendment from the bill.
Anyways, most bills from COngress do not tend to have the desired effect for the majority of consumers anyway. Look to the TARP bill and the bailout bills, and the other laws passed that repealed consumer protections.

USAA banking used to be open to anyone a few years ago, but then closed that option back in 2006 I think. I see now that it's available to anyone again.
We got in when their banking was available to anyone back in 2005 (?), and we really love banking with them.. what a great bank!
If you're looking for a new bank, definitely look into banking with USAA. Who knows when they may close that door again!? Their customer service alone is worth it.
Eligibility for their various products available here.
