Farm Archaeology..what it this thing?

Building the new chicken coop yesterday I found a 2' long nail with holes in it.

What would such a thing be used for? Pic soon (well, as soon as I can find where I put my camera!).

I have no idea but I think we should have a thread just for people to name old farm implements, etc. that readers find on their property. I thought of this when we looked at a farm to buy that had buildings full of old tools, etc.

Are you sure it was a nail? I'm guessing it was some kind of hitch pin.

They use those to hold forms for pouring concrete (like for a driveway or sidewalk). You drive the nails through the little holes into the wood form (after driving stake into the ground).

Yep, I agree. Knew I'd seen those things before, but couldn't remember where. Duh, it was last time bil was over to help us with some concrete work.

Sorry, I misread it as 2 inches instead of 2 feet long and I was writing as you were posting the photo.

I agreed that it is a form stake.

Can't imagine why it's here, unless it's been here a looong time.

There is no poured cement anywhere except the old barn foundation, and that barn came down in the early 80's.

The people who built this place and farmed it had a grocery in the village, they were here for about 50 years, but then there were renters for a while, so perhaps one of them was in the cement laying business.

Maybe they used it as a grounding rod or to tie out a pet.

BTW, you gott take better care of your hammer. You can't be leaving it outside where it's gonna get all rusty.

I knew someone would notice that

I forgot I'd left it out on a tree stump the other day
