Hi-Lift or Hydraulic Jack?
Which is Best in Pickup?
I'm thinking Hi-Lift.

Yes, high lift. Make sure you have places on the bumper to lift from, some newer trucks do not have good lift points for the high lift style. Have carried one in the truck for many years, do not use often but when needed it is priceless!

Do not haul anything that is too heavy for your dear sweet wife to lift.

They call high lift jacks "man killers" for a reason. I'd go with a scissors jack and a piece of board to put under it. Maybe carry both in case you get in a situation where you absolutely cannot get under an axle.

A hi-lift jack has many other uses besides just jacking. I have seen them used for so many things it is amazing. From jacking just about anything up to pulling stumps to pulling a stuck truck out of a hole (Used like sort of a wench)
They are American Made in Bloomfield Indiana my home town :-)

Well one thing about a Hi-Lift I've never done with any other Jack is I had a Pickup buried to the Axle, laying on its side and I pulled it out with my Hi-Lift.

my choices would be
1.winch
2.HiLift
3.Jack
Winches are beautiful but expensive and you really need a hilift also so between the 2 I'd go hi lift

I'd go with the hydraulic, actually I DO go with a hydraulic. I've seen too many things slip off a high lift.

I keep a hi lift in my work pickup. Actually, I keep one in my own pickup, too. The work pickup is a 2008 Chevy 3/4 ton. First flat I had, on the rear, I started lifting on the bumper with the hi lift and I was glad it was high because the bed rail was about 6 feet off the ground and I was almost out of jack before the tire came off the ground. I stuck a bottle jack in the pickup when I got home. Much less jacking, much safer feeling. But the hi lift is real handy for lots of things and it will always have a place.

I keep two tractor jacks (hi lift)... one want lift my 10K one ton truck. I can use the jacks to pull me out of a hole, if necessary. I also keep spray lubricant in the tool box, to spray on the jack's springs and parts to make em work real well... otherwise they get dirty and rust up in the back of my truck.

Hi Lift hands down. So much more versatile than the hydraulic lack.

A hi-lift type jack is darn usefull. When you're gotten stuck down deep, when you need to pull out way back in the woods, when you want to pull fence posts, when you want to jack the porch roof a bit, etc.
But when it comes to jacking the truck to change the wheel, a standard hydraulic jack under the axle is far safer. It's more stable and secure and much more likely to be used correctly and safely.

................BRP , Here is a 2 ton scissor jack powered by a 12 volt dc motor , you just hook it too the battery and let it lift the vehicle ! Probably good enough for most half ton trucks and small trucks . I'm going too get one too carry in my Ranger .

I rarely use a jack just for jacking a truck, no use hauling around a jack I can't use on a tractor or any other heavy equipment I own. I keep 2 hydraulic jacks, 1 20 ton and 1 12 ton in the truck, and some hardwood blocks.

Yea, a hydraulic is better for changing a tire but if you know BRP's drive then the hi lift is more versatile. I have one of those stupid bottle jacks in my Jeep (came with it) but I need about 6" of boards or whatever to reach the frame and get the tire in the air and it's stock. The hilift can get you clearance, pull you out or even be used as a spreader.

when it is said and done you many times need both around, the biggest problem with many trucks is with a flat tire, you need a squat hydraulic jack and then all most standard hydraulic jack to finish off with if you have a truly flat tire,
I had a blow out with my one tone loaded a few weeks ago, and the truck was nearly on the rim, I had a squat 20 ton, I only had a 1/8" of clearance, and then I had to jack it up take the rim off the truck and place under the wheel to lower the jack and raise the screw, and ended up having to do that three times, when said and done, (the spare was taller than the original tire), the high lift would not have been a good choice either for this IMO, but one need to test the situation (my factory jacks went to pot soon after I bought the truck), to see if one can raise it with a total flat tire, and have some blocks and a ply wood sheet to support the jack if not on a hard surface,
any way do it safe,
