Me neither.....I will sit in a lawn chair with a glass of iced tea and watch it all day long !
Wise fellow gave me some good advice long time ago: Don't confuse working hard with working smart. LOT of folks work hard, and never get anywhere......the ones that work hard AND smart come ahead.
BTW.....link doesn't work for me....

Link doesn't work for me...
However, from the link it sounds like it has to do with voluntary adversity?
I'd never sign up for voluntary adversity... in other words, I don't go looking for it... it usually shows up unwanted and I have to deal with it!!!

I have to say I balk at calling it "voluntary adversity"--it's not THAT bad I always thought the old "voluntary simplicity" was silly too, and sounds so resigned--why not just call it simplicity? Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift to be free...

I was going to look at the link but it was too much work.
I agree that too much comfort and convenience can make a person lazy and dissatisfied. Most of the time I park away from the door so I have to walk but then I love to walk and regularly walk 6-8 miles.
When I trained karate I squeezed out every ounce of strength I had every training session. When I left I felt drained but refreshed. By doing so the other 22 hours of the day were easier both mentally and physically.
There is a belief in karate that we are like a battery. If you try to save your energy with inaction the energy in the battery goes away and the battery goes dead. But, if you expend that energy on a regular basis the energy is replaced by the energy of the universe and the battery stays fully charged. It really does seem that the belief is true from my experience.

The description at the link sounds like normal life for us.
"How to live a life of voluntary adversity:
Grow your own food
Cook from scratch
Compost
Build it yourself
Improvise
Heat with wood
Collect rainwater"
Voluntary adversity makes me think of a young couple we know who live with no indoor plumbing and an outdoor kitchen, work hard and grow a good part of their own food. For a break, they went camping in the rain when they had a free weekend!

I may have gotten jaded over the years. I dug my first septic tank hole, by hand, it took 12 hours of hard digging with a shovel and a bucket. Cost? 25c worth of beans.
When I dig my next one, I'll borrow a backhoe, it'll take longer to drive the backhoe over and back to the neighbors, than it will to dig it. Cost? Maybe fill the tank up with diesel (40 bucks). An hours worth of work. Would free up ten hours that I'd otherwise be shoveling.
Digging by hand, at the time, was smart, cause I had more time than money (and hadn't acquired all my negotiating skills {borrowing backhoes}). Now it would be stupid, as I can work on the computer all day, make enough to cover the backhoe work, and still put 200$ in the bank account, and not suffer back pain and blisters for a week. That is smart.
Time vs. Money is a basic calculus equation. Whichever I have more of at the time I need something done, decides how a project will go. Of course, if you're jobless, time trumps money. Does for me anyhow.

Keep your eye on the ball, your shoulder to the plow, your nose to the grindstone....
Now try working in that position.
Asceticism can get to be its own religion if you let it. That's why I like an ice cold tea for a shady break from the hot summer garden so I can enjoy the "fruits of my labor" and thank the One who makes it possible. Just my own way and opinion.

voluntary adversity is buying a 125 year old home that needs a lot of work, and then spending the next 6+ years working on it . . .

Voluntary adversity is raising kids....
We all inadvertantly volunteer for adversity by living - why ask for more of it on purpose?

Adversity is in the eye of the beholder. Those things are fun for me. I just gotta wonder at the person who calls them adverse.
Adversity to me is stuff like burying your child that got kicked in the head by your plowhorse, or losing your house by a tornado, or emmigrating to a new land to make a living and never seeing your family again. All that stuff was voluntary for many people(well except for the tornado). That list of stuff above is the easy work.

I have difficulty believing that the author of this article believes in what he says. After all, he has internet and writes a blog.
