Where can I buy bulk WHOLE WHEAT?

Hi- I find this interesting that I'm having some difficulty finding bulk whole wheat in central Ohio. I'm looking for 25-50 pound bags. Have found sites online but nothing locally. Figuring that I'd have to pay large shipping cost to purchase online.

Any insight/guidance is greatly appreciated.

I'm JUST getting into the homesteading "thing" and I want to store some wheat for long-term use as well learn to use it now. I'm embarrassed that we don't even know really what to do with whole wheat and I find it a shame that most American's wouldn't know what to do with. Geeezzz we've lost some serious self-sufficiency skills over the last 50-75 years.

Also looking for 5 gallon food grade buckets. Some of the local grocery stores said to simply check with them every time I come in. If anyone has insight on where to get those without purchasing brand new I'd appreciate that info as well. Much thanks!

Don't forget to buy a wheat grinder (preferably a manual with an electric attachment).

Lehmann's sells wheat berries, don't know shipping costs.

I buy mine for the LDS storehouse in Cleveland. The one in Cleveland allows non LDS members to buy, which is good as I'm not LDS. I bought 7-25# bags of white wheat($5.80 each) and 2-25# bags a red wheat ($6.35 each) yesterday. Prices are crazy cheap compared to other stores.

Here's the info for the mid-Ohio one:

Phone (614) 836-2627

Address
4431 Marketing Place
PO Box 367
Groveport, Ohio 43125

To use it most grind it into flour. Do a forum search on grain mills, they come up allot. You can leave it as berries and cook it like oatmeal, not too popular in this house. Just be careful not to add too much to you diet at a time....it is VERY high in fiber. Start out using it 50-50 with all-purpose in you cooking, and slowly add more. DH, DS and I can do 100% home ground, but 7 yr old DD can't. We do about 60-70% home ground and the rest white. Every 6 months I add in more wheat, eventually she'll be OK. The younger and older have the hardest time getting use to it. We could do better then 50-50 for her till about age 7, and we have bought/eaten whole wheat flour since before she was born.

I've been getting my bulk foods for years from here: http://www.azurestandard.com/

They sell chemical free and organic products and deliver free to specific drop points throughout the western US. In fact they sell just about everything from laundry soap to organic produce and wool socks. A 50# bag of wheat berries costs about $24. If you don't live near one of their drop points I bet they can recommend a bulk supplier near you.

You can also join a food buying co-op if you have one in your area. Search UNFI food buying groups.

If there are any bulk foods stores in your area, they might be able to order just what you want.

It sounds like the LDS store in Cleveland would be your best bet in price as well as location...but if you're ever in NW Indiana, there's a wonderful bulk food store on the N/S road that leads into Shipshewana. It's even called "Bulk Foods". I have purchased hard red and hard white wheat there at a fair price.

When looking for plastic buckets for food storage, you might keep two things in mind. #1 is to make sure that they are made of food-grade plastic. #2 is to make sure that the lid is gasketed. You might check the Emergency Essentials website. They carry buckets, lids, gamma lids and a very good selection of grains, etc.

They also carry a handy little tool to help lift off those tightly sealed gasketed lids.

I order through www.clnf.org. If you have a health food store stop and ask if there is a buying co-op in the area.

How about your local feed store. Ask for feed quality red wheat berries. The ones for planting are treated but the feed quality are not.

Any feed store can get you whole wheat in a 40 or 50 pound bag.

I had to special order some, but it worked.

We were growing portobella mushrooms and had been told that whole wheat was a good growing medium.

I pay $7 for 50 lbs from a local farmer...ask around at farmers markets, the farmers usually dont bring the wheat, but will if you ask

I don't know anything about using wheat for home use, but why can't you go to the local elevator and get whatever you need from a pound to several tons?

Where are you in central Ohio? There is an amish store near Bellefountaine.... I'll have to see if I can find the name or address. Main road...easy to find. I bought bulk red and white wheat there. Organic, even!

We're in the Columbus area. Do you remember the price. The local health food store wants between $1.69/lb and $1.99/lb. depending on the type. OUCH! Not gonna do that!

Lots of great suggestions and leads from everyone. Going to start with the LDS distribution in Groveport since it isn't too far. Then will go to some of the online places that many here have suggested.
