New Berkey/Berkefeld filters--wash before use??

We've been using a Berkey with ceramic filters for years. Finally I ordered new filters and they've arrived, but without instructions. I remember distinctly that I'm supposed to do something to the filters before use, but don't remember what. Does anyone here know? Something like scrub them or soak them. I've emailed the guy I bought them from but thought I might get a faster response here.

thanks,

Lissy

I don't own one but... Sometimes you can find the owners manual for things online and download them. I'd try the manufacturer's website.

if you have the black berkey filters, you're supposed to "prime" them:
Quote:

Priming the Black Berkey water filter elements before their first use and during the inital setup is necessary to get full benifit and flow. The filtering medium of this element is a very dense and have a lot of surface tension. Water has a hard time penetrating this dense medium the first time the filter is used. Forcing water through the Black Berkey element relieves this surface tension allowing you to enjoy the full flow and benifits of this great product. This priming process is easy and only takes a few minutes to perform. Simply follow the directions below.
as for the white super steraysl filters, i don't think you have to do anything with them.

Thank you all; I just remember there was something more than just installing and starting to use them. The Berkey guy emailed me though and said just wash the outside before using.
Thanks again!
