Got myself snake-bit this morning

Went to open up the chicken coop & feed the chickens. Big ol' black snake was in with the hay / feed & I got bit on the hand & index finger. It really smarts! And it's hard to type with a big ol' bandaid on my finger!

I was wondering if we had another one "visiting" the henhouse (usually find several a year eating eggs) because there were days when there would be NO eggs in the laying box.

Anyways......I usually just squish their heads down, pick them up & relocate them to a far-far away place (ok, just a couple miles down the road). But I've never been bitten until today.

He is now in a pillow case awaiting trial. Anyone want to be a part of the jury???

Nickie, somehow I figured you would!

My first instinct was to take the nearest shovel & whack his head off, but figured I'd put him in a sack to let my emotions settle down. I know it sounds wacky, but I took it very personally that he bit me! Yeah, I know, I know, it's my mishandling, but I'm still feeling a bit miffed.

Guess it took a little reminder for me to be more cautious with the wildlife. Lesson learned!

Do you live in a state that has a Castle Doctrine? If so, that snake might be well within its legal rights. I guess it also depends on how long it's been squatting in your hen house as to whether or not it could be considered a legal owner.

But seriously...

I would turn it loose. It was just being a snake.

I hope it was just a rat/black snake. I bet that hurt. I would have had a heart attack. Here it is just as likely to be poisonous snake. I am not so sure I could be as kind.

As much as I know that rat/black snakes are not poisonous I still jump a good ways when I come up on one unexpectedly and I have had them get kind of aggressive when I encroach on their space so I know how you feel. If he isnt raiding your chicken coop I would just relocate him....

LOL!

Still in the sack. Should I ask him if he has a retainer with a lawyer??

I think I'd rather deal directly with the snake!

Get to a doctor and get that bite treated. Snakes' mouths are full of very nasty bacteria that can give you a whopping, dangerous infection.

ANTIBIOTICS!!!

Yep you can send it here. I really like black snakes in the outbuildings and my pump house. They do surprise me and I admit I jump and have been known to scream like a school girl but my kids just get the comic relief from Dad when I have to resort to such foolish matters. Now if it is poison or a water snake they aren't so lucky. I hate for me the family or goats to get bit.

Let it live...Black snakes will keep other less desirable snakes at bay...

Since it's in a pillowcase I go for pouring water on it and water boarding it into telling where all the other snakeses are. Or just let it go and accept it as the way things go.
Snakes happen.

I'll take him. I'll even bribe him to stay by feeding him an egg occasionally. Don't they eat rattlesnakes? If so, I will take every black snake you ever find.

+1 on this. My sister's ex got bit by a black snake and got a very serious infection from it. Had to have IV antibiotics.

I'm sorry you got bit. Please take care of yourself. I don't know what to do with the snake, just don't send it to Texas. We have our own down here. Although, with all the rain, I'm thinking they drowned this winter :-) Hoping, anyway.

Heh heh, I wasnt going to admit that myself but I must admit to a little verbal accompaniment to my reaction on reaching for something and having it slither.....and I cant think of a better word to describe the motion a snake makes either..slither..it even sounds snakey!!

Well, just got back from town, so the doctor's office is closed. I suppose I'll call her tomorrow to see what she thinks I should do.

After putting said snake into pillowcase, I went inside & scrubbed the bites out & squished alchohol in it & scrubbed some more. Hopefully that took care of it. The scrubbing & alchohol hurt 10x's more than the bite!

Snake is now living about 7 miles down the road. Hopefully where there are no chicken coops nearby!
