Pour one or two great big pots of boiling water down the drain.

Pour rubbing alcohol down the drain. Kills them. If they are flying around and landing on counters - attach a sprayer to the alcohol bottle and spray them. Works every time!

During the summer when I'm doing a lot of canning and it seems like I have tons of fruit flies in the kitchen, I do this: (saw this trick on the internet and it works!) Put some cider vinegar in a small bowl and put plastic wrap over the bowl, nice and tight. Using a pencil or something sharp, punch some holes in the plastic wrap. The flies get in there because they are attracted to the fruity vinegar, but they can't seem to find their way out! After a couple days, I have a bowl full of flies, and they seem more attracted to the bowl of vinegar, than to my kitchen garbage. I change the bowl of vinegar every few days - really surprising how many dead fruit flies are in there! A cheap fruit fly magnet!!

I had the same situation after butchering a deer in the kitchen.

I've done the vinegar trap. It works, but not as well as a sticky fly strip hanging near the sink. I also poured ammonia down ALL the drains in the house.

At night, I put a lamp near the fly strip to attract them there.

For sport, I took a sprayer filled with alcohol and a BBQ lighter to make a small flamethrower (you must be very careful here and have a fire extinguisher nearby) and I took great pleasure roasting them in mid-air.

Took a week, but they're all gone!

I have critters coming out of the potting soil I bought. Miracle grow is the brand. They are not fruit flies but they still fly around.

I also use vinegar as a lethal attractant. Doesn't seem to matter what type of vinegar, even an empty wine bottle lures them.

I've read that to sterilize soil you can put it in a pan and bake in an oven at 300 F for an hour. Don't add water, or you might have a brick.
