Making your razor blade last longer

Somewhere recently there was a thread involving a question about this. Darned if I can find it of course.

Anyhow, came across this interesting link about an easy way to extend the life of your blade.

http://consumerist.com/2010/03/make-...20-months.html

Conveniently, my blade was getting pretty dull feeling and I was about to replace it. So I tried the method. Nothing more than running it backwards up my arm a few strokes, stroping it. By golly, it worked! No, the blade isn't magically sharp as new. But it most definately is sharp enough to work well and I sure don't need to replace it.

Makes sense, like strapping. I run my finger nail along the blade to put the edge back on. This needs to be done carefully, of course. Doing this I get about a month out of a blade before it starts pulling too much.

Cheers

My husband and I bought this sharpener thing from Lehman's, and it works really good. It looks like a mirror, and you drag the razor across the mirror thing under running water. After using the razor, you should make sure it is clean and then dry it completely before putting it away. This prevents microscopic rusting which can dull the blades.

After using the sharpener for a couple of months, and not having to change the blade head (the sharpener is for single or multiple blade disposable razors) we bought sharpeners for both of our daughters to use in their own homes. I can't recommend those things highly enough, we are going on 5 months now on the same blade. My husband shaves his beard (very thick) daily, and his head every couple or three days as needed. I use the razor on my legs and underarms a couple of times a week.

Supposedly you can get up to a year of use from a single disposable razor, it sure would be great if that's true. But even if it doesn't last a year, we have already gotten 10 times the use we ordinarily would have, and that was only my husband using the razor. I would have had my own, so really I guess it is much more than 10 times the normal use so far.

Cool! I use the 5-6 blade versions which can get very expensive. Nothing to lose so I'll give it a try. Thanks!

One thing that seems to make my razors last longer is the dry them off real good when done shaving. I heard that the corrosion on the blade makes them dull. Mine last for months, but I am going to try the arm thing tomorrow morning!

Hate to steal the thread... but I only shave my neck once a week from April to August... and the shavers last a long time!

Pyramid power!

Believe it. Or not.

I remember hearing this back in the 70s. People were even wearing pyramid shaped hats to make their "minds sharper!"
