Tractor info

My son was given this tractor by his great-grandpa. I'd like him to have more info on it. I'm sure it is an Allis Chalmers but other than that what??? the only # on it is AM-3864(I think)-7ChS. Are there any tractor buffs out there that could help us out? thanks a bunch.

It's a wd or wd45. The allis chalmers web site will give you information about how to tell which it is. Molly

I just bought a 1948 WC and that looks like a WD-45 to me. Looks like a great project for your son.

WC, WD, and WD45 are sort of an evolution of same design line. I'd say one above is WD or WD45. Hard to tell from pictures perspective. If it has hydraulics you can eliminate WC, none of them came with factory hydraulics. Some had a mechanical cam lift. And WC had optional pto and it wasnt a live pto, it just bolted to bottom of transmission. If you didnt get a pto, they just had a plate there. WC also didnt have foot brakes, it had hand brake on each side of tractor. The WD had two clutches, use the hand one if you wanted what was in effect live pto.

Still a guess but I'd say above is a WD.

I don't know Allis Chalmers tractors at all but the nearest serial number match up I could find for what you gave would indicate it is a CA, with the 1957 models beginning with the serial #38618. Was the serial # on top of the transmission next to the shift pattern?

WC, WD, and WD45 all have the serial number on the rear of the differential housing, with the WC having it near the filler plug.

Let me join the others in suggesting yesterdaystractors.com.

I visit that site as much as this one. Can not tell you how helpful they are there. I have made all my own repairs, and trouble shooting, following their advise.

My neighbor, when I was a kid had a WD that pulled 3 mounted plows, it was a great tractor and I loved it, one lever on the column for gas the other for hydraulics, easy to get around in when doing point work. His brother bought a new WD 45 in 1957 and I thought it was the cats meow, even had a little more power than the WD... The only complaint I had was they are hard to get on and get seated....

It takes a bit of getting used to also. Mine has a foot clutch which I like and I dont really use brakes that much but I will probably get used to it. I have no PTO or hydraulics and just plan to restore it and maybe use it to pull a hay wagon but if I could find an old 2 bottom trip plow it would be a hoot to do the corn patch with it. I wasnt looking for an AC but I got a deal from a relative and it is original, complete, and even has good tin and paint.

An owner could get foot brakes for a WC. Dad had one which my older brother got killed on. It had hand brakes. My Grandpa, not the one who bought the 34 CC Case I have, bought the first one in 1938 from the St Joseph Dealership. His name was at the front of a board of all the people who bought one that year. Anyway, dad said grandpa had bought foot brakes to put on it, but never put them on before he sold it.
I bought a WD 1949 for my boy. It is hard to get on till u get used to getting on on the L side. I also dont like the hand clutch, as it hits my R knee. When I bought it, the seller said it had had the engine redone, and bored out to produce 40HP. The R R wheel had had a leak at some time with calicum and rotted out around the valve stem hole. His FIL is a master welder, and he THINKS? he can cut out the entire rim at that point, and, in sections, replace the rim, where it bends out to the outside edge of the rim. Had I thought about my older brother Bob, when I bought it, I never would have, as we hadnt had a AC on the place in our family since dads WC. But, it had a 3 pt lift, and my boy thought he wanted it, so I bought it for a grand, and here it sets.. He still lives in town, so he has no place for it. 3 tractors here. The CC is waiting for a carb kit. The 48 H IHC, the mag/gen just quit, and the AC WC is without a rear wheel. Luckily im not farming this year. Im going to take my Cub and an 8ft horse disc and start discing my 90sq garden tomorrow. Wish me luck lol
As to back to the pic. I see that the muffler is braced. Hope the manifold isnt broke. thats expensive, unless its still fit to weld back. I see also, that it hasnt got the cultivator mounts up front where theres a tool box of some sort. There 2 flat iron pieces welded on where the box in the pic is, They look like Cs the top and bottom around 3in top, and 5 bottom. It being a wide front end, It might not been used for cultivateing, unless they had a 4 row cultivator for it, which was rare in those days. At least where I came from. I didnt see a 4 row anything till the 70s. as was said about YT forums, is right on. He ll learn waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than he ever wanted or thought he needed to know, just by looking at some of the questions some have, and wondering what answers might have generated from it. Hope he likes and appriciates his AC, as much as I like and appriciate my grandpas CC Case. Ive used it since I was 8, and now im 62. been around it for a long time.

LOL! Noooooo. feeding four boys is enough thankyouverymuch! LOL!

Thanks everyone for the posts. I will get over to yesterday's tractors. It does have a foot and a hand clutch, hydraulics and a pto in the back.

I'm not sure the muffler is original, my grandad is one who can make chicken salad outta chicken..well, anyway it is definitely braced and needs work.
The only numbers I found were stamped in the axle..everything else is either covered in grease or rubbed raw.

Andrew has been very blessed to have his Great Grandpa around growing up. Andy is 12 and my granddad is 89. They both love to tinker so they fit each other well.

Thanks again for all your help!
