Spinoff from the plastics thread
If you really want to see and try and understand the wasteful mentality of our society try and explain tanning beds and the electricity they use. The best part is they have tanning salons with a dozen tanning beds and then the AC going full blast.

Our company manufactures (among a lot of other things) a foot tanner! Yes, apparently people are so mortified at having white feet from wearing socks on the golf course, that they pony up hundreds of dollars for a foot tanner!

This kind of falls into the category of "To each their own." What might make me scratch my head in wonderment is entirely normal to others.
A big engery wasting hobby that always made me wonder is NASCAR and whole culture of consumerism that surrounds it - the licensed clothing, the window stickers, the video games, the wall clocks, etc., etc., etc. Actually, come to think of it, I guess I feel that way about the industry of spectator professional sports in general, but I suppose when discussing energy usage, NASCAR comes to mind first.

I always thought of tanning beds as human microwaves. I know that is not how they actually work but from looking at some people to seem to over do it I sort of got that impression.
Personally I get all the sun and tanning I want (uneven though it may be,) just being out with the garden and critters.

Nascar is a Business just like any other compony. They "put out" entertainment as a product.
And I would think in a few years they will be switching to Ethanol.
The Indy Cars already have.
Course mentioning clothing and such, just look at ALL the professional Sports that sell those things, why just single out Nascar?
A few years ago The Phoenix Suns basketball team, was the highest selling of Player Jerseys that any NBA team.
And look at any football team. And my goodness just look at our own Green Bay Packers and The Cheese Hats etc. And the Famous Number 4 Jersey.
I don't even have to mention his name, that number and player is so famous, and is still playing even after 17 years, don't know yet about this year, LOL.
All these things are a business and even at that many many dollars from selling such things go toward a bunch of charities.

Yes that is why things are as cheap as they are. DVD recorders are what less then 50 bucks, use it a few years it goes south, throw it away and get a new one, sure can't fix it at those prices.
A new printer 50 bucks 60 bucks use it a few years it takes a power throw it away get a new one that has even more features in it then the previous one had.
Coffee maker 10 bucks 15 bucks it breaks even in 2 years throw the sucker away and buy another one.
I knew some people at work, that when their printer ran out of ink, instead of buying those expensive ink replacements, they threw it away and bought a new printer because it was cheaper then buying replacement ink.

Stewardship seems to be a mostly lost concept in our society. Stewards manage property that they don't own, but in other words are responsible for. Biblically, we do not own anything, not even ourselves.
And actually, one of the most wasted items is our time. I continually struggle with the amount of time that goes by in my day, when I should be more careful with what I do. So with that said, I shall be going to bed now.
G' night.

Thats because of stupidity. People buy printers on the pricetag. Lowest price sells the most. So they actually lose money on the printers some times just to make it back on the ink. Although with the refilling they are losing money thats why Kodak and others are trying to push for a more even markup in the printer market with their "lowest cost of ownership" ad campaign.

The marketing people have out thought you once again. Most new cheapo printers now have an "introductory" mini cartridge that lasts very short time so they force you to go out and buy at least one full size cartridge.
Short term thinking combined with greed is what will destroy us as a society.

NASCAR is a business to the people making money off of it. It is a hobby, or maybe more appropriately, past time for the masses that consume the product.
Either way...
Did you miss the part where I said "Actually, come to think of it, I guess I feel that way about the industry of spectator professional sports in general, but I suppose when discussing energy usage, NASCAR comes to mind first. "
If I struck some kind of chord with you that you are taking offense, remember I started off my comment with the remark that this whole discussion is a "to each their own" kind of thing. Some people think tanning beds are a waste of energy but to others it is something they enjoy and, still to others, it is their livelihood.
To me, NASCAR is a perfect example of something unnecessary that does use up a whole lot of energy resources. You can compare it to other sports but, to me, just the fuel consumption alone makes it stand out in the forefront.
And whatever bit of money that might be diverted to charties from this or any professional sport is a drop in the bucket to the profits they are pulling in hand over fist. What is has to do with the amount of energy the sport consumes, I don't know and I'm not sure why you even bring it up.
In the end, it is just as much a non-necessity as tanning beds. Or football. Or "American Idol". Or shuffleboard. Or crossword puzzles. Or target shooing. Or golf. Or watercolor painting. Or, or, or....

Is it this era (I was out of the country for 4 years) or just this area (AL)? I see a whole lot more tanning salons now than I did in FL and TX. And so much FREE sunshine- I could understand up north or in England!

Well I wonder how many will be along now after the 10% tax is lived on them from this health bill being signed?
