My discovery: Dish washing unnecessary

I may be found dead in a gutter somewhere when the dishsoap, dishwasher and hot water heater companies find out I've said this and their multi-billion dollar industries are wiped out.

At my work for the past several years, I have failed to wash my dishes. I just reuse them. I've started to do the same thing at home, even though my wife would love to wash my stuff.

As long as you deprive bacteria of either food, water, or warmth, they won't grow. So, I just try to make sure I've eaten down to a thin film which will dry quickly. This includes the supposedly deadly raw milk I leave in the bottom of my cup.

Of course, if you're sharing dishes, you might want to wash, but it doesn't make sense to be kissing your wife, then washing dishes to prevent disease spread.

I spent years as a public health inspector enforcing severe dishwashing - either high temperature or chlorine to kill everything. Can't believe I'm saying all this.

It may be unnecessary, but it is certainly desireable.

It's not just a matter of sanitation though. Water poured into a glass with a thin film of dried milk tastes... well, not good (at least in my opinion.) And that super garlicky fish entree just doesn't go well with many other foods that might be served on the plate later on.

You'd be surprised at what you can eat without hurting you. Anyone see that survivalist guy on tv? I've seen him come upon a dead animal on the ground that has been dead for who knows how long and died of who knows what. Sometimes other animals have been eating on them. He will cut down to some meat that hasn't already been chewed on, cut out a chunk, and eat it. The sight in some 3rd world countries of dead chickens and other animals hanging in the hot sun for sale makes me want to gag but those people eat them all the time.

Wouldn't humidity matter? Time? Material left? Your "Thin" is miles thick to bacteria anyhow. If you really hate washing dishes just eat straight from the pot! I've santized needle nosed pliers to use as a fork/chopsticks with a propane torch!!

I"ve eaten submarines and hamburgers with my hands so dirty they leave fingerprints on the buns, usually while working at remote locations where there is no place to wash your hands. Just wipe your hands on your pants and eat!

Reminds me of Almanzo in the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. He and his brother, instead of washing dishes, just kept cooking and eating while alternating with the same plate. If I remember correctly it was waffles or pancakes? It might have been in the Long Cold Winter, it's been a while since I read them.

LOL at Ross.
I have to vote for dishwashing.

I do, however, only wash my coffee pot every other use or so. I know, but it gives it that "truck stop" taste and texture. LOLOL

If I could eat the whole thing, I would eat straight from the pot, but if can only eat some, alot of wet stuff left behind, and growth would be a problem. With a thin crust of food, it dries before enough bug numbers to make me sick. Which is the bottom line, I haven't been sick. If I die, I'll type a retraction.

I thought this site was about getting back to the simple life. How did the Indians wash dishes? Sure alot of squeamish people out roughing it on the homestead!

Speaking of eating out of the pot, just today I realized every time we pull the pot out of the frig for a serving, we get a clean spoon to get it onto our plate. I decided to leave a spoon in the pot in the frig.

Years ago, before refrigeration, people would eat leftovers for many days. They didn't usually die. People consumed a higher bacterial load than we now do.... they also were so used to it that they could do it.

If you were my hubby I'd wash your dishes whether or not you wanted me to.... what in the heck do you do with them after eating? I wouldn't let those things in my cabinets.

There are many things that may not be necessary but are desirable....

People used to bathe only once or twice a year. Bathing is not necessary..... Does that mean we don't have to bathe?

I'm pretty sure that if you cultured your dishes you'd find undesirable/dangerous bacteria... and a pretty high load. I don't exactly get your logic at all. If you culture your cutting board you'll find bacteria there. I'm pretty certain that your dishes are not totally smooth. Bacteria will stay in those crevices.

Sounds like a food poison case just waiting to happen.

LOL!! This reminds me of something I read in a book once as a teenager and stuck in my head ever since. It was in regards to Queen Elizabeth I
(picture it said in a rather snooty tone of voice waaayyy back in the day)

"The Queen takes a bath once a month whether she needs it or not!!"

Have you guys heard the joke about coldwater? This guys nephew comes for a visit and his uncle cooks him breakfast. He comments that the plates aren't very clean thinking that maybe his uncles eyesight is going. His uncle says they are as clean as coldwater can get them. OKAY. So lunch time comes and again that plates are just not too clean to he comments to his uncle and his uncle says they are as clean as coldwater can get them. Later in the day the nephew tries to leave and his uncles dog comes running up trying to bite him , he yells to his uncle and his uncle yells back, "Coldwater, get back on over here" The dogs name was coldwater. LOL
