Song help needed

So I'm backing asking my favorite friends....

I have to teach a "Singing with your Hammered Dulcimer" workshop next weekend and I need to come up with a couple songs that don't have too many different chords. These are mostly older adults, so I don't want to teach childish songs, or "Row, row, row your boat" types of things.

My first thought was Bill Staines "River" which is a popular dulcimer melody....but I can't sing it.

Any suggestions as to other tunes? I was even thinking that something from the 20's, 30's....50's, etc., would be fun.

Thanks in advance!
CC

How about Amazing Grace? You can make it as simple or complex as you want.

And/ or most American folk music has few and simple chords. Carter family, Baez, Dylan.
Have fun.

Yeah, I thought about Amazing Grace. But EVERYONE already does that, probably.
Can you give me some Carter family titles?

Smoke on the Water? Most of us old people know it, at least the opening riff ;^)

"Will the Circle be Unbroken", "You are my Flower", "Wildwood Flower", I'm Thinking Tonight of my Blue Eyes", "Keep on the Sunny Side, "I Saw the Light" "Way Downtown". Mind you, I have no idea if these work with the Hammered Dulcimer. Just some of my favorites from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's ground-breaking "Will the Circle be Unbroken".

Ha! I see Bak2tn snuck in there while I was thinking/writing my post. Great minds think alike?

Lots of good suggestions. I am kicking myself...I bought a songbook at a garage sale, was for harpsicord and I think it mentioned Dulcimer, but now I cannot locate it in all my little piles of things I have to buy and keep. Next time I locate it, I will holler at you...maybe able to print some off . I had also bought an Old, old one at a flea market on the Carter family, had songs, with the chords, and the written music as well...some I had never heard of before. I bought me an electronic keyboard a couple weeks ago, tired of trying to get my old piano tuned. I also have an Omnichord which I enjoy playing....I entertain myself...LOL

I have found it's much easier to play and sing songs that you know well. Since it's a workshop perhaps you could ask some of the attendees beforehand for some suggestions. They would think you were a fantastic teacher if you showed them how to play their favorite songs!

Two from the Lap Dulcimer days are Aunt Rhody(very simple) and
Jesse James. A couple fiddle ]tunes they use to play were
"The Lively Lad" and "Old Brown Mule"
I'm not sure those would work on Hammer Dulcimer. though.
Have Fun

Proud Mary is probably one of the easiest songs to play. It is mostly the G chord.

She'll be comin' round the mountain
Down in the Valley
Jimmy Crack Corn
Ol' John Henry

or Christmas carols!

I teach chording on the Hammered dulcimer, and find that using the children's songs usually works pretty well as people do know them. Others that I have listed are:
Buffalo Gals (2 chords)
Down in the Valley (2 or 3 chords)
Marines Hymn (3 chords)
You are my Sunshine (3 chords)
Soldiers Joy (3 chords) doubt many would know the words
This Land is Your land (3 chords)
Southwind (3 chords) but I doubt many would know the words
Come Thou fount of Every Blessing (3 chords)
All Creatures of our God and King (3 chords)
Because He Lives (3 chords)
And Can it Be (4 chords)
Be Thou my Vision (4 chords)
Home on the Range (4 chords)
Precious Memories (4 chords)
How Great Thou Art (5 chords)
Blessed Assurance (5 chords)
Shenandoah (5 or 6 chords)
