Water pressure regulator, where to install?

Part of the ongoing water line replacement threads.
On a municipal water system where is the recommended placement of the pressure regulator? I have seen some right after the meter, some are actually buried there with the line. This would give protection to the whole system but reduces pressure to everything. I have mine at the entrance to the structure at the cutoff valve. My unregulated pressure measured at my yard hydrant is 80 psi while my regulated pressure in the buildings is 40 psi.

Regulating at the meter will reduce stress on all of the plumbing that the home owner is responsible for maintaining. If you have a long run then set the pressure to where the line losses will be compensated for but still end up at the home at the pressure you desire. Shock created by the repairs to the municipal lines will be cushioned from the regulator forward when mounted at the meter.

You are responsible for all water lines after the meter so install it at the meter . High pressure on lines can cause problems so protect all lines you are responsible for .

make sure you have room to work on it in the future, or use unions so you can get it out and work on it, prv's can and do fail.
