In WI, one used to be able to log on to some portion of the State website & get minor violations - civil court issues, perhaps?
But the official State background check does cost - and will contain the real information you want - convictions, serious crimes, etc. I am not sure, there may be some limitations if the person was convicted of a crime in another state - whether or not that info will show up on your State's check.
For peace of mind, I would definitely get name, d.o.b., ssn, and any other names used - be it maiden or aliases, and the official state background check. Especially if this intern is going to be around your home, family, money, or possessions. (can you take the form & payment to a local cop shop for quicker processing?)
And always remember, just because they don't have a record, doesn't mean they are honest/safe...they maybe just haven't been caught yet.
