Either yesterday or today is when our Karen (mod of Homemaking Forums) was to go to Seaworld down there - I hope it didn't happen while she was there.

It was Tilikum not shamoo
Ive got pics of me and the wife petting and feeding him .
Of course during the show we saw he knocked the trainer out of the way and took a crane that was after his fish .
Lock up a creature that size with a brain as large as our own and at some point its gonna get fed up and lash out .

According to the story is was as follows: "A SeaWorld employee who asked not to be identified confirmed the description of the attack and added that the whale involved is named Tillikum."

My first thought was "Is this the same whale that killed the nutjob in 99 who hid in the park till after closing and then thought he would swim with the whales". Apparently the answer is "Yes".
What a shame that it gives PETA more woe-woes to bewail in it's animal-unfriendly campaigns.

The reports have said that they were in the "after show feeding tank" area. Tourists can watch the trainers feed the whales. It was apparently after the big show at 1pm Eastern

They'll likely release more in a couple of days after they view the videos that were taken. Figure out WHY the whale jumped up and grabbed her.

and yes....they have a couple of orca whales that are called "shamu" when performing. This one's actual name is Tillikum. (according to the reports.

One of the people there said the 2 whales were obviously agitated about something. Like with any animal...when agitated, the "lizard" brain takes over. pure instinct takes over.

Now CNN is saying the whales name is Telly and it is one of the largest whales in captivity.
Regardless of it's name it is a tragedy. For those of us who pray, please lets do so for her grieving family and the mental health of those who witnessed this.

I'm thinking 3 strikes and its out.
I'd say trying to kill 3 people (2 successfully) is enough to make pet food outta him.

The whale's name is Tillicum and this is the third death she's been associated with.

The first time 1991 in British Columbia (another trainer), the guy who got past security in 1999, and now today.

Sheesh. Maybe the animals are revolting. There was a bull that gored several people at a bull fight somewhere (I can't remember where) in the last day or two as well.

This was a horrible thing. But, it was not the whale's fault. It just did what killer whales do. It was the fault of humans for putting the whale in that position in the first place.

Just my opinion.

When I was a child growing up in San Diego, my girl scout troop took a trip to Sea World. We were sitting watching the Shamu show ( which was in alot smaller tank) and the trainers then wore bright bikinis. We watched in horror as Shamu grabbed the gal by her leg and was dragging her around the tank. Men from all over were grabbing things and throwing them at the whale. After what seemedl like forever, Shamu finally let the poor lady go but by then her leg was a mess. To this day, I think that those poor animals should not be allowed to be displayed like they are. They are not your friendly domestic pets that will sit on your lap and play nice.
I imagine that this won't stop them from handling these animals, but now that Busch does not own them (Sea World) maybe this might be the final link that breaks the cycle.

Well I agree that its time to make Tillicum into fish sticks at this point, he's a large mature adult male whose killed three people, THREE people, first one in 1991, he should have been euthed then. How are they going to control him now, can't release him into the wild, can't trust him not to kill again. Its really the only responsible thing they can do, oh wait, lets sell him to another aquarium and hope he doesn't kill anyone there, maybe out of the US so the victims may not be able to sue us . Before people get all teary eyed and PETAfied over the poor whale just remember that could be your daughter not coming home tonight.

There's probably a polite way of saying this too...Thanks for the other version.

The first incident was a legitimate accident.
The second incident was entirely the nutjobs fault. No blame on the whale.
Today's incident was indeed truly sad........ but there are always risks when you choose to work with ANY animal!! They are not tame little babies. Whether you choose to work with orcas, tigers, elephants, gorillas or many others...... you are always risking your health/life to some degree.

Aside from the public safety issue of releasing a whale that has already killed three people, This whale has had his teeth filed down flat. Probably because he is aggressive. Orcas are supposed to have large conical shaped teeth.

This is Tillicum.

Another performing orca, with his teeth intact.

Killer whales and dolphins are for the most part captured in the wild...some are being captive bred but really it's not a natural environment for those animals. They're used to really swimming hundreds of miles a week and thinking for themselves. I say release 'em back in the wild and if they have forgotten how to hunt...good riddance. They'll learn fast..the ones that remember something will survive.
