need to ship 3500lbs from GA to WI

I need to find a way to transport some equipment (scientific stuff) to Wisconsin. It would be a "we will load it into your truck, and unload in Wisconsin" thing. We will be putting the things on pallets, and securing them (or in shipping crates on pallets).

I need to find a regular trucker I think? And I'm not sure how to locate or where to put up a "we have this that needs to be moved. Who can take it?". The items will fit approx 14'x7'. I was originally going to haul it myself, but it's $250,000 worth of stuff, and I really don't want to do that without insurance. .... So...I believe I'm best off looking for a regular hauler....maybe someone with an empty load coming north? or partial empty?

Any thoughts on how I find someone? Or if someone on the board can do this...even better. I need to submit the price, so can't guarantee the owner will go for it.

The only thing I can come up with is check phone book for brokerage or interstate companies that can contact, licensed and insured freight hauler. I would stick with one of the better known companies, may be more expensive slightly but hauling that kind of value worth it.

Look in the yellow pages under "Freight Lines" or "Motor Freight Lines".....companies like Yellow Freight, or Snider, and so on. They will quote you a rate based on the weight and volume. Check several companies, as you can get quite a few variations in price depending on whether they run direct or have to hand it off to another company enroute.

Cheapest way will be terminal to terminal....you crate it, deliver to a terminal, and pick it up from one on the other end.

I have shipped and received many things this way, and it's the cheapest way to go most of the time.

Surely you have trucking companies in your area - Yellow Freight, UPS Freight, etc.

I'm guessing any of these companies can get the equipment delivered for cheaper than somebody who is working for themselves. If you need some phone numbers, let me know.

I'll second the vote for UShip. We have used them for a number of shipments in the last two years and have been very pleased with them.
You post what you want to move, from what location to what location, then the members of the Uship community will bid on your job. You have the right to accept or decline any of the bids. Each member has a feedback score which is similar to what ebay uses.
We have dealt with at least 6 different shippers and have been very happy with the price and service provided by all of them. We currently are under contract for two more shipments right now.

Try Estes Express, or ABF Freight. They both have phone numbers in the book.
I know you said the stuff is on pallets, but you might want to buy a roll of shrinkwrap to wrap the contents of the pallet to prevent anything falling off. I have to ship stuff all of the time for work, and these are the carriers we use.

I found the ABF website, call them, tell them you have two (or whatever ) pallets to be picked up, they will ask approx weight, and insurance etc, and give you a price and pick up the next day
