Help with old gas stove

The stove I use (when not using the wood cookstove) is very old. It was burning well. After cleaning it numerious times, it has changed and is putting out soot. On the front, under the handles, there is an opening(for each burner), it adjusts for more or less air to go in. Would I want less air or more to mix with the propaine gas? My arms are sore from scrubbing all the pots and pans, and I'm going to have to paint the ceiling. Thank you!

You will want more air. Soot is the burning of fuel that is incomplete and air will make it burn much better.

More air for propane. You said you cleaned the burners, make sure there are no holes stopped up with grease or cleaning detergent on your burners. You can use a safety pin to clean holes out, just make sure you do not enlarge the holes. Also make sure the burner is completely dry of water. The way I adjust the air , I turn the air adjustment down about half way and turn the burner on high, as you turn the air adjustment opening wider the flame will start to leave the burner, when it does that close the opening until the flame lays back down on the burner. There should be no soot then.
