Local futures - helping others become more resilient

here is a link for info on a group getting started in Mid-Michigan to promote locally grown food and how to develop the skills to grow/preserve your own. They are having an information/teaching meeting in Wayland, Sat, Feb 21. I think this is a great idea of ways those of us with a homesteading-frame of mind can link together to promote our stuff/skills! I'm going with Blackwillowfarm! Wanna come too?

From the article
A group of Wayland volunteers are hosting a series of events to address how citizens can become more resilient by supporting and maintaining a local food supply. Working with non-profit organization Local Future, volunteers Maryann Lesert, Greg Lewis and Erin Lesert have scheduled 2010 local food events.

“The event schedule spans the growing season, which organizers hope will create a higher level of awareness of local growers and providers as well as encouraging Wayland residents to pick up valuable composting, rain catching, gardening and food preserving skills along the way,” Lesert said.

The first event will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, at United Church of Wayland, 411 Superior, with a screening and discussion of the film, “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil.” The film tells the story of the hardship, ingenuity and survival of the Cuban people after the 1990s collapse of the former Soviet Union. Because Cuba received a great portion of its oil and agricultural supplies from Russia, Cubans were in crisis after the collapse of the Soviet Union, facing shortages of oil and food.

I am very interested to see how they organize themselves. They are rather too far for me to attend regularly or be too involved, but I am interested in starting something like this in my area.

A little to far for me to drive. I wish someone would start something like this in eastern Michigan in the Lansing or Flint area. Its food for thought. Thanks for posting this.

I agree! That's why I am going - to see what they are doing and try to get something similar in my area. It is 1 1/2 hours for me. But then, there's the trip to the hatchery and lunch with HST friends along the way.....

I think I'll try to make it. I'd like to see something like this started around here, between Lansing and Grand Rapids. Would work well with our food coop.

My co-op in the U.P. was extremely involved in the community and offered numerous classes/tours/movie nights/bookclubs/dinners throughout the year. I miss that place.

That looks very interesting. I had my birthday dinner scheduled for that afternoon..... I think I'm going to see if I can move it to Sunday so I can attend!

This is very much too far away for all of you, but there is a group in EC Ks that is doing a great job of organizing "grow/eat local". They are tapping into a lot of info from other groups also. If any of you want links to what they are doing, let me know. They are also turning the local farmers market into quite the event, not only selling produce and meat, etc. but also cooked foods that are grown local. They even had "soup" evenings in the winter so people could eat or take home soups that the ingredients were "local grown".

One goal they have is to get local grown into all of the local community eating sources. Schools, hospital, university, etc. They are working on commitments from producers to help make that possible.

And they are working toward organic as much as possible.

Getting to meet fellow HST folks is an added benefit to attending. How will I know you? Name tags?

Thanks, I'm willing to work to make it happen, just don't know how to get started.

I don't know Wayland or it's restaurants so if someone lets me know where to be when I'd love to have lunch with the group.

I will ask about lunch, but anyone can pick a place. Uccello's sounds familiar as does the Bibb...

Hi All,

Just found this thread. Thanks Callie for starting it!!!!

We're meeting at Uccello's for lunch in Wayland at noon, the film starts at 2:00, runs for approx 1 hr and a discussion will follow. It's just a mile up the road from lunch to the movie.

At the Wayland exit off of US131, go east to Uccello's on your left (north side).
They open at noon Saturday. Their phone# 269-792-6211.

We'll let the hostess at Uccello's know we are expecting you. Just ask for Carla's table.

Hope you all can make it. Looking forward to this and meeting everyone too!

I'll definitely keep my eyes open for future opportunities tho!!
