New Homestead in Progress

I post very rarely, but I visit the site almost daily. I am very excited about our new homestead in progress and I wanted to share! We have about 70 acres near Tuscaloosa, AL. We have a driveway and a homestead site. Recently we cleared some of the land and seeing the "lay of the land" has given me a lot of ideas as where to plant fruit & nut trees, where to locate the barn, etc.

It is difficult to get a real appreciation for the land from the pics, but it is a great view. We're up around 400' above sea level which is higher than most the land around us giving us a great view. Obviously, we are VERY early in the process, but it shows a lot of potential! The homespot is fairly level and the land gradually drops off to the west.

I expect to get fruit & nut trees in this month. Hopefully we'll be able to sell our house in the 'burbs some day soon and follow our dream of living in the country. That is how I grew up and I want to raise my 4 younguns the same way.

Hope you enjoy & thanks for all the informational (and entertaining) posts.

Jim

PS: Sorry if I've violated some forum rule by posting the big pictures.

Hey I drove along the smaller road from U AL last year (W of I65) and it looked like we saw PawPaw trees somewhere. Please try to find them or some in the area and grow some on your place if I was right. Maybe your freecycle or Craigs list could locate some.

Really nice looking property Jim. I used to have a house in Aliceville about 20 years ago and I always liked that area from about Tuscaloosa down towards Toxey and Gilbertown. Are you going to build a house? Have animals? or just plant an oat patch and have fun during deer season?

Thanks for the nice replies! Let me answer in order:

-I had not thought about a blog...that is a good idea.

-I didn't realize people grew paw-paws in these parts, I will have to research.

-The plan is for a small family farm: house, barn, animals, a lot of fruit & nut trees, a large vegetable garden. I won't be off the grid, but I do plan to build the house in a very energy efficient manner: great insulation, ground-source heat pump, etc. We've got a house plan that we designed already drawn up with a great big kitchen and pantry.

This is a long-time dream of mine, but I had to finish playing in the Navy and settle somewhere before I could try it! My wife and I are really excited and we hope to get started this year or next.

Congrats on getting started on your longterm plans. I was down in your neck of the woods last fall to buy a trailor. Wish you well in your plans. This is a great place for advice. I am up north in Marshall County, south of Huntsville.

Great start!! Please set up a blog! It's awesome to see progress and it's a great keepsake of what you did and how you did it. Ours is supposed to be for it but we make little progress

Congrats on your homestead. Looks like you are off to a great start.
We are doing the same thing here. I agree with others, start a blog or web site to keep us all posted on your progress.
It has been fun for us to keep adding photos as the place changes.
This was to be the winter we finished the fencing and built our barn for spring stock.
But.....thanks to the wet winter we are behind,so not many new photos lately.
Point is, things will happen, don't let it get you down just keep plodding along.
The trip is as much fun as the destination!
Again, good luck and keep us posted.
