Homesteading group in RGV

As most of you know, the pigman and I have relocated to Harlingen Texas in the very southern tip of Texas. What we miss the most is our homesteading friends. I am wondering if there is anyone in our new area who raise and preserve their own food, enjoy heritage breeds and the old crafts etc. I would even be willing to help teach the young people how to can, make bread, cheese, etc. along with sharing our experience with raising animals. So, if there is anyone in the Rio Grande Valley that would be interested in connecting with other homesteaders here, please let us know.

Welcome to Texas piglady! I don't live in that area but I'm sure you can find many folks there willing to exchange tips. Homesteading classes sound like a great idea for the youth of today!

Where did you relocate from and how do you like Harlingen?

We moved from the Ozarks to texas due to health problems (can't handle the cold weather any more). So far, we absolutely love it. It is like perpetual spring here but then i have not lived here during summer yet. I brought my rare midget white turkeys, large black hogs, and glochester old spots (pigs) and the horses. Once here, I obtained barred rocks and black copper marans (chickens). We went from 185 acres to 17 but that's about all we can care for now at our age. So far, it has been less stressful and more fun. This area is very fertile so I expect my garden to do great. Now if I could just fine some like minded friends!
