SWCD seedling sales

Anyone getting anything interesting?
What are prices doing?
Do you only buy from your county or do you check out other counties around you?

We are getting:
(This is the pricing, not the qty we are getting)

Blue Spruce 25/$9
White Pine 25/$9
Red rasberries 5/$7
Elderberries 5/$7

Black Gum (nearby County) 5/$8
American Plum 5/$7

We've gotten the Blue Spruce and White Pine in the past and found that if we get fewer but start them in pots for a few years we have better results than if we plant the seedling direct. We still have 50 in pots to plant that we didn't get to last year. Just mounded up wood chips around the row of pots for the winter.

I already ordered some rasberries and elderberries but at those prices I'll get 20-30 of each. You can never have too many fruits and berries around.

The black gum we'll plant in hopes to eventually get some tupolo type honey from them.

For the most I would check the State Forestry or DNR nursery. They sell them bare root and it will cost about $25 per hundred.

Ohio shut down their state nurseries a couple years ago.

Our SWCD in Hancock County only offers pine trees. I WISH I could get plum and elderberry. Can I order them from other districts? Hmmmm.....where do you live????

cc-rider,

You can order from other SWCDs (I have never been turned down) but you have to show up and get your order on the pickup day. That limits a lot of people unless they have some other reason to travel to the other county or are close to the county line.

I've ordered from Summit and Ashland for years. MIL is close to the Summit SWCD office and picks our order up for us. When I order from Ashland I'm willing to make the drive because I'm ordering hundreds of seedlings.

For Stark County I can drive a different way to the farm and pass through Massillon on pickup day. It's a little less efficient but makes sense if they have trees I really want.

We are in Cuyahoga and our farm is in Carroll.

I know you are looking to move further east so if you think you are going to be out my way (we are close to where 80 and 71 meet) we can maybe work out something for me to pick up the rasberries or elderberries for you. Ping me offline if you think this might make sense. Pickup date is Thursday April 15th. We would probably get them from MIL that evening.

I'm not 100% sure I will order from Stark SWCD which has the American Plums. These are a bit different from the plums you might be thinking of.... http://www.starkswcd.org/americanPlumTop.html

Okay, I'll bite, what does the SWCD acronym stand for? I'm not familiar with it.

For KS: http://www.kansasforests.org/conservation/index.shtml

Soil (and) Water Conservation District = SWCD

Mike -- didn't get the job in Ashland so won't be moving that way any time soon.
Still looking in that area, though!

Soil and Water Conservation District. In Ohio they are organized by county (as far as I know).

Great prices! Would love to find fruit around here. I don't think they offer that, but not positive. If if they did, they do the saplings on Saturday and I work at least every Saturday so it wouldn't be possible.

Almost every county has SWCD tree sales. It has been my experience you can get a better deal by ordering directly from a nursery. I would recommend looking into what is available at Itasca Greenhouse or similar tree nursery.
