Canada getting rid of gun registration?

I always thought Canada had lots of good homesteading land but didn't consider it because of the gun laws.

Most Aemricans think we have no pistols and few rifles and shotguns. Always been wrong and yes the long gun registry is on its way out..... if they can get it passed before the govt. is defeated. The long gun regisrty is probably the biggest governmental failure of all time. Never mind it was never needed, its pretty much un-usable by law enforcement officers on the street, and never got much respect by gun owners. Oh yeah and it ran over budget by.... 1000%? Forecast to cost 200 million it was closing on 2 billion last I heard. How many gun smugglers could have been caught prosecuted and jailed for 2 billion?

I have several registered rifles here in Canada. It's not that big a deal, I'm sure there are lots of unregistered long guns out there that no one really cares about.
After years of arguing with my wife about having a weapon in the house, we now have several, and it's no longer an issue at all. In fact, my wife suggested I get her one!
Buying a gun in Canada isn't the ordeal that many make it out to be. You need to take a safety course, fill out a sheet, and buy a gun. Registration is over the phone on the spot.
Once TSHTF, my guns will disappear mysteriously, and there will be a quarantine sign on my front gate to deter snoops.

Haven't checked, but do wonder.... will Yanks be allowed to once again carry their unloaded long arms on thru trips to Alaska? I think the last year I made the AK trip was when they disallowed us Americanus horriblus to carry our own firearms. Always wondered how much crime was committed by Americans on the Alcan.

The program was probably run by an ex-pat from the States.

You can do it but lots of paperwork and you kind of are at the whims of whoever is on duty at the time you cross eh? Its even worse re-entering the U.S. when you show your Alaska Drivers license, Military ID Card, and a copy of your military orders and the border patrol wants to know your purpose for entering the U.S.. Basically, Canadians at the border are at least friendly when they screw with you unlike their surly and uneducated U.S. cousins.

That would be the leader of our Liberal party.

Don't think so. I was just looking at the gov't site about guns and they are getting rid of an old form for registration and replacing it with a new one.

The law hasn't been passed to repeal the registry yet. It is supposed to be coming though.

Quote:
Parliament is currently reviewing a Bill to amend the Firearms Act, the portion dealing with registration of non-restricted firearms. The legislative process is following its course and the changes will only come into effect once they have been adopted by both Houses of Parliament and receive Royal Assent.
Until such time, the registration of non-restricted firearms is still required by law and the day-to-day operations of the Canadian Firearms Program continue as usual.
More information will be provided to our clients throughout

One spring, while travelling to AK, thru Canada (of course), I was given the RED LIGHT, OMG HE's a terrorist bit, when entering US Customs. I got out of the truck and figured I was about to get a cavity search... and the customs guys broke out laughing. One of my buddies and his wife were a few hours ahead of me... I'd been 'looking' for them the whole 3 day drive up, but never caught sight of them... they'd told the customs guys a bald headed bearded guy would be driving an old Jeep pickup that looked like it might have came out of the "The Grapes of Wrath", and to give me a hard time. Well, they had me going till they told me about my buddies joke. Didn't ask me diddly about who, what, when, where... I had nothing I shouldn't have had, but it I did get a few more gray hairs that day...

Boy, I sure do love driving the Alcan. I'd love to be about fifty miles off to one side of it... or heck, up there I could probably live right on the road and be able to stand it!!!

Who knows what the government here will do about guns or anything else. Prime Minister Harper shut down Parliment to avoid tough questions from the opposing party. When Parliment resumes after the Olympics they have to start from scratch again all those items that were on the agenda when the Parliment was closed. So that may mean another go-a-round about abolishing gun control. We registered our 22 gun and five years later we got a letter saying we didn't need to pay to re-register because it was unclear whether the law would be changed.Registering guns isn't such a big deal but the problem is if you want to pass one on like to a family member you can't. If you die the gun is confiscated so we were told.

As for homesteading in Canada guns are less of a problem than getting resident status here. It can be complicated and expensive to immigrate unless you marry a Canadian!Anyone should check out the immigration laws before buying land and planning to move here. There are a whole lot of empty house near us owned by Americans who can only stay 6 months of the year.

Gun control isn't being abolished, there will still be plenty of that left after the long gun regisrty is gone! Including all the wild and fanciful regs around muzzleloader airguns and .25 and .32 pistols. The current effort to remove the registry is sitting in the senate so what parliment does (short of going to election) won't matter. Once parliment resumes (and remember the Liberals prorogued the house far more often than the convservatives when they were in power) the bill should go back for third reading and then off to the GG for royal assent.

BTW your guns shouldn't be confiscated upon death but you do need to have a licensed recipient who will either inherit or hold them in trust until your heirs become licensed.
