wood stove footpath

we're planning to get a wood stove, boxy style, for emergency heat, supplimental heat, and to cook on while our power is out. our original house plan didn't include this wood burner, so we'll have to 'make it fit'. we had planned on getting a gennie, but now it seems this would be better for our needs and budget.

in deciding what stove to buy, and where to put it in the home, i would like advice on how much space around the stove we need to plan for? tia

A couple of thoughts . The design of your home will play a large part in where you place the stove as you will have to have a chimney/flue . Wood stove manufactures have instructions as to how close each side of the stove can be to combustible materials . I would first decide on the best chimney spot & then start comparing stoves to find one I liked that would best fit in that spot .

A nice document that I've referenced before on installation clearances can be found here.

The cheap box style stove is going to require the greatest clearances. Some of the modern stoves can have zero clearances, so depends on what stove/heater you get.

Any stove or heater that you buy new will tell you the minimum clearances needed.
