Where in US?

I am a 31 year old man with 16 years of homebuilding experience, who has found himself recently unemployed and nearly homeless, I am a great freshwater fisherman and a pretty good gardener. I was wondering if anyone out there knows where in the US a person like myself can go with no funds and live off the land indefinately. I will not wait 2 to 3 years for the job market to pick up, and I will not live in a shelter or off the state when I am strong enough and smart enough to work the land and provide for myself. I would like to do it legally, but if I have to I will do it illegally. Please, if anyone has information that can assist me, that would be gratefully apprieciated

Approach the sheriff in the area you would like to live. Ask him if he currently holds any odd shaped property for the county that needs the property tax brought up to date. He might be able to give you some leads.

The state views the one who pays the tax as the owner.

Not in the USA, might as well go find some island to live on, if that is what you are intended to do is "Live Off The Land" whit no means of outside support or help.

Yes,, but at that time, some of that land was not owned by somebody either. Now all land is owned by somebody, some corporation, some individual, be it the state, or Federally owned and controlled.
Even 80% of the State of AZ. is Federally owned. Can't just go and spot out a few acres to do with what you wish, and if one is wanting to "live off" that land one must have plenty of land, and that is just not available in this day in age anymore. Sorry but that is the way things have gone, and this is the real world now.

You may also be able to find a caretaker position that provides a home in exchange for labor.

Ya take your chances with federally controlled parks and rangers and the park service department of the Government, sounds like a plan to me.
The first sign of smoke from a "camp fire" and you will have choppers in the air, and guys with automatic weapons.

That would be what a person should be trying to be going after. That is a much better idea then just "squatting".
Even it means going to a large dairy and "milking" in exchange for a place to stay.
Heck one dairy een here in WI. even in this time of bad milk prices is planning to go from 4,000 to 8,000. And I am sure many places have turn over so one can get some kind of work for a bed.

Ok...if you want people to play nicely, you have to play nicely, too.

Back to the topic....
What kind of resources will you require to live off the land? Water? Electric?

If you have tribal affiliation you can go live on the res with your tribe. You could look into a caretaker position. One was offered on here a while back at a pretty little place in Alaska. Rent in exchange for work, but you would still need $$$ for utilities and the little comforts we tend to take for granted.

If you want to do it ilegally there is plenty of BLM property available out west. But if you're caught the govt will run you off.

DeaconJim made a good suggestion regarding caretaking. Here is a link to a resource for those kinds of positions:
http://www.caretaker.org/

Check out "Business Opportunity Cross Village". That might appeal to you.

I wish you the best and you are assured of my prayers; there are many in your position. I admire your resolve to provide for yourself relying on the skills you have.

now you guys are not being very nice,edogg49 sorry they are not playing nice. I feel your pain, move to the midwest, they are still building houses here, I don`t think the bad economy has got here yet. I have a good friend that is native american, and I have a pinky finger that is partly. You still can find some jobs in this area, just don`t know how long it will last. Thanks Marc
