I'm hoping to NOT get another ice storm last year! Huge damage throughout the woods!
I think Farmer's Almanac said we'll have a wet winter... more snow than ice. That would be good... well, better, anyway. I worry about the animals breaking a leg (or worse) on the ice.

Different this year is, we have city water in the new house. Don't need power to run it! YAY!
Weeks without power are very doable for us as long as we have water, mainly for the critters.
We ran our well-pump off the generator last year, but with that much ice, even that was a pain feeding/starting the generator.

Dang it. I still haven't finished cleaning up all the downed trees from last years
storm. But I guess we're ready for another. Not liking the idea but ready.
Our generator isn't quite big enough to power the well pump but we'll get by.

YES
I have my non electric propane fireplace which heats the house wonderful. I have a full tank! This was my one last big concern, heat for power outages and I handled it.

I have all other supplies needed---waiting for that ice storm we always get but nothing yet? We are having warmer temps and TONS of rain. (hmm..flood gear is seeming more important..lol)

That's the way we feel, RJM. The damage to the woods two years in a row (tornado, then ice storm) is irreparable. Been cutting some... but there's enough firewood down to heat the county for months!

I was new to the country when last years ice storm hit and we were isolated and without power for over five days. We managed just fine and rather enjoyed it. This year we are prepared for just about anything, two years supply of wood, backup automatic generator with a thousand gallon of fuel, and enough food for us and the animals to get through for about eight months.

Battery lights. It is too darn hard to read by candle light!

On the DOWN side, my wood pile is a lot smaller and there is no time to fix that.

Oh, one other thing we have now...
when we wired the new house, we put a plug on the outside for the generator. Now, instead of running extension cords, we flip two breakers off (hot tub and CHA), start the generator, and plug it into the house.

Got a new generator this year!!!! Everyone in Kansas will need to thank me if we don't get the bad weather that will require it's use. The weather has been great since I bought it so far.

Yep, we took a direct hit by a tornado when Ike rolled thru the area and
lots of trees went down.

Few months later we got nailed by the ice storm.
Ice storm dropped more trees then the tornado did.

In 1 100 yard X 100 yard area in a pasture all the trees went. 50+ large
oaks. And that was just in 1 pasture. Lots of trees down also in the
other pastures.

Were actually having much milder weather than we usually get in this part of the state at this time of year.
We had a full day of rain in December & again the other day which of course then it turns cold again so it's like a skating rink every where you walk around our little farm.

I'm just keeping my site's on SPRING! It's gotta get here sooner or later!

Around here, an ice storm is usually a blip on the radar and a one day event. We've never had the kinds of disruptions that so many here have had. In any event... We're prepared. This year's new prep is a portable power pack that can be recharged by the car in an emergency. We still need to pick up a trickle charger for it so that we can charge it with the sun. The power pack is like a big battery that has a couple of outlets on it to operate a few lights in an emergency.
