Why the big jump in milk prices?

Figured I'd ask.

Milk locally has gone up to over $4 a gallon in the last couple of weeks. I know diesel fuel has gone up but milk seemed to go up quite a bit. We did go to the big city a couple of weeks ago and milk was $2.69 a gallon there. Are we just getting hosed because they know we have to travel so far?

no real reason from commodities. It's been stable at around $15.50ish for months. We are still paying low rates for milk.

I think it's just like the gas. Why is the price going up? Because they can and we can't do anything about it. just my opinion of course. haha

Sounds like a local supply and demand issue. Its going up here but only about a dime a gallon.

At 4.00 a gallon i would have a cow (pun intented). If you go thru a lot of milk you should consider it.We buy 1/2 gallons and have to pour it out sometimes as just me and dw and we dont drink it

Two issues provide support for the current increase in fluid milk prices. First the weak US dollar has increased demand for our milk products overseas which drives up the domestic price. Secondly, the supply of milk products has fallen.

A cow will be one of our first things on the farm. We drink a lot of milk between the 7 of us. Cereal, oatmeal, coco, drinking, cooking, cheese making etc.

It was stable at $2.89 here for a long time. Publix the big chain grocery down south would boast that it had a stable milk price, wouldn't go up. Well, it's up close to $3.25 a gallon now.

We drink a lot of milk, probably average 5 gallons a week and the milk prices here keep going up $3.65 a gallon last time I think.

Unfortunately, a cow isn't a good option for us now as DH couldn't milk at all with the arthritis in his hand and I know my back/hip would give me problems getting down and back up to milk.

It is up a small amount here. This is for 1% so at $2.69 it is not bad at all
But Butter is WAY down in price at $1.89 a pound~!

The word from the LDS cannery over to Jax is that dry milk prices are jumping big come the sixteenth so it's not just fluid milk apparently.

No idea why the increase though.

I have been buying it on sale (different % each week) at our local grocery for $1.99. Now it is on 'sale' for $2.50 locally. In the big town - $3.25. I make sure the milk isn't all I buy at the local store - as I know they have to be losing $ on it.

Cows in the barns have rebelled at cold hands on their udders so have demanded a price increase they get for their effort.

The sum of it is "inflation" look for it to affect everything you buy.... it will get worse. No "doomsday" prediction, just the effect of the economy and government policy.

I've noticed a small increase, but I've been expecting it, after so many dairy farmers recently went bankrupt or downsized.

Yeah, butter is cheap. I've stocked up on extra and have it in the freezer.

Around here (Cleveland area) it is on sale all over the place for less than $2/gallon. Best price this week was $1.79/gallon.
