Why? And what does it do?

I have a cell phone a basic one at that and my "to do" list is a wire bound note book and all appointments are on the 'fridge calendar. I can't see where an expensive fancy electronic gadget has anything I need.

dd had one....all her friends at the time had one and she just had to have it. If you're with verizon it carries a $30 a month internet bill with it. I told her that she had to pay for the phone and that bill every single month and that I would not nag her to pay her bill....either she did it without me asking or I turned service off. As it happens she's decided those friends are not the best people to hang around and just this past month she gave the blackberry to dh (he needed a new phone) and he got her another phone. He took over the internet bill out of his perdiem money. It makes more sense this way anyway. he has no internet or tv at the camper so now he can hook the blackberry up to his computer and at least have something to do at night. He also comes closer to using it to its potential than dd did...all she did was check email and facebook on it and she got the facebook app on her new phone for considerably less money.

Our oldest daughter and her hubby have them. I've played with it and no doubt if you're on the go all the time it's handy. She can surf the web, text, call, take pics, and i guess do some personal stuff. I don't know what she paid for it, but her monthly bill is $80 to $100/per mth! That's just for hers!!
My thoughts....I have no need, nor do I want one. I just don't have that much to talk about. Landline works fine for me for what little I use a phone for. My "teenage bride" feels the same way. My wife and I keep in contact via 2 meter ham radio, as we both have our licenses.
Edit: Just let everyone know, I don't have a problem with folks having and using them.

Doesn't your regular cell phone have internet capability? My basic one does for a monthly fee.

Don't limit your search to just Blackberries. There are other competing devices to be looked at. I have a Samsung Moment which is a Google Android phone, but I'm still too new to mine to go on about it much. The cell service provider may should be at least as much of a consideration as the phone itself depending on how well your various providers cover your area. I live in the country so Sprint in my area is the only real choice because their coverage is more complete than any of their competition.

I have ATT and a Blackberry.
But instead of getting the "Free when you upgrade and with a minimum contract" deal. I bought one off ebay for $20 - an older model that can't take pictures and doesn't have music.
I charged it, switched the sim card over - and it works. lol. I do not want internet on it, so I did not connect it and told ATT that I did not want the service - since I was not signing up for a new contract, they couldn't MAKE me do it.
It works just like a regular cell phone and I am no longer under contract.
If I ever do want internet - I just go online or call ATT and activate the internet service - $30/month.
My friend has Verizon and she liked my Blackberry so much that she got one as well - a newer model with camera and music, off of ebay. She signed up for the internet and docking ability - she pays $30/month for the internet service and $30/month to be able to use it as a modem for her laptop plus whatever her contract fees are.

Love it
I have a BB and have had for several years. I love it. As a pastor of a church I have everyone's phone/address and email at my fingers. Being bivocational (work a public job as well) presents the challange of enough time. My blackberry helps tremendously.

I have one. It is sitting on my workbench as it died again. Blackberry had a problem with the mini usb port and refuses to acknowledge the weakness. There are people on ebay repairing the phones as the failure frequency affords a chance for them to make money. I liked the phone as the speaker was super clear and the camera took fair pics. For a working person the phone is easily physically broken also. An Otterbox case would make a nice gift for an active person having a BB.

My old cell phone was sickly, and I tried an iphone. I really didn't like that. My gf was a big fan of the BB. So I thought I would take verizon up on their "try it for two weeks" deal. In about a day I was hooked. When I'm waiting in line at the store, or waiting for a train to pass, or ... sometimes ... in the bathroom ...
And on top of all that, when the regular internet goes down, it keeps chugging. And I can connect my laptop to my blackberry when I'm on the road and there is no wifi.

Yup, I am a me too guy. I went and got it last spring. I have always been the person who wanted a phone only, but since running my own business and with clients and suppliers relying mainly on email I broke down and got one. I have found it useful to look up information form a web site while sitting in a parking lot waiting for a meeting and for seeing who emailed me.
My biggest gripe would be that the timing for getting emails. Sometimes things don't come to the phone in a timely manor and I have to force the phone to check for email. I have also noted internet outages when Research in Motion (maker of the BB) has had issues as they sync up all of the users with their emails.
Keep in mind I have my Nokia phone which I have had for 6 years as a back up. The phone before that was when I was in another state and had it for 4 years. When I moved to Illinois I went without for 3 years until I had to break down and get one for work.

I've found that a blackberry is pretty much of little or no use.
Unless you've got at least a pint, there's not really much you can do with them.
Well, maybe garnish. But that would be for just one plate.
Try to cut them in half, and they just get messy.

I like blackberry. Also dewberry. Want to get some blueberry, but need better fencing...
Seriously, they're nice devices... if you make lots of extra income or can take them off your taxes. GF got a 'smartphone' for Christmas... when the first bill came in, I questioned how smart it really was. For the amount of money they cost, plus the ~1200 a year they cost, they should wash my dishes, clean my clothes, teleport medium rare prime rib to my plate each night.
My fancy tracfone does more than I need. Cost? 5c/minute. If I want to browse the web, send or receive videos, yada yada yada I'll get out the notebook... and connect up with a wifi network. Who wants to watch a movie or browse the web on a hand held screen... I like my vid's on on a 17" screen....
Make sure to get one of the 'tracking programs' so you can keep tabs on your kids...

DH has one through his work, paid for by the work. I used it when we went to our property for a few days. Nice handy little device, but I wouldn't want to have to pay the monthly cost for internet etc. access.
Patty the only advice I have for you is to check online before going to the store. You are probably going to need a contract anyway, and there are some places that sell the phones for 1c if you sign up for a 2 year contract.

My SO and I have an IPhone. We absolutely love it. We are a truck driving team so we are on the road almost all the time. It comes in super handy. Internet, Music we can listen to with the headset so as not to disturb the one sleeping, e-mail, unlimited calls, the list goes on and on. not to mention all the applications that are available (some for a fee). I personally downloaded "store-it" which is a database program. I love it because i can keep track of all our books and dvd's this way as well as books and dvd's that we want. once we have the book, we check it off on the list and it moves it over to our "have" list. incredibly handy when you're only home every couple months and can't remember all the "diy" books you already own! lol
