1 Month Emergency Food Stock

The recent thread on the lack of general un-preparedness in this country got me to thinkin about what should I consider stocking. More of a cost vs. value sorta thing. As I stated on that thread we generally have no more than a month worth of food in the house at any given time. I'm cool with that for the most part but I might be interested in putting up an "emergency" stash of food. Something to box up and not touch. Not a revolving pantry. Use and replace once a year.

If you were going to the store with the intent of buying a one month supply of "box and can", ready to eat, just add water kinda food for "emergency" supplies what would your list look like? Palatable is good.

C Brice - if you're really interested in all this stuff, way down the HT index, there is a forum "Survival & Emergency Prep" - we talk of this stuff most all the time, and there are a lot of threads that might be of interest to you.

one box isn't nearly enough at our house......come to Survival and Emer prep! That's where you'll meet the 'over zealous" like me!!

We alternate between a one month supply of things and a three month supply of things depending on many factors. We would like a six month supply but have never got that far yet.
We don't have anything realy set aside for "only" emergency use..... we store what we eat and eat what we store. After every trip to the store the new stuff is put in back and the piles moved forward. Now that I have a system down it takes me maybe an extra 20 minutes a month to be prepared.
(also rotate several non-food things as well)

C Brice, I have something like that one box you mentioned, due to my experience with hurricanes since 2005. In addition, I prep more, when I can. Since the box (or 3) is for a relatively short amount of time, and I'd eke out the supply by cooking up/canning the things in the freezer, right now I have 60 cans of sardines, kippers, tuna; 37 cans of soup, 10 lbs of nuts, 40 cans of vegetables. Some water! Dog and cat food in sacks. I also have a Berkey water filter, gas stove, and for the last 2 go-rounds, I duct-taped the freezer shut, covering it with quilts, only opening it swiftly to take out things to can or thaw and eat immediately. I have a large block of ice in a dishpan in there, and 20 small containers of ice among the pkgs of food. During the last debacle, I lost nothing; I either ate or canned all w/in 10 days. Food stayed frozen that long, til I ate it, etc. All this is suplemented usually by a year round garden of sorts. hope this helps. By the way, crisis make people hungry! Best regards, ldc

Rice, dry beans, can tuna, can salmon, dog food, cat food. Toilet paper!

There are better lists down in the Surv. Emergency section. Lots of good stuff down there.

Minute rice, beef stew, tuna, canned fruits, the powdered pkgs that will go into the water to change the flavor, ravioli, spagetti o's if you have little ones, soups, canned veggies, applesauce, pickles, treet/spam if you eat it, canned ham, olives

Since I can and freeze most of our food, having a "stockpile" sort of just happens. When we butcher, we put a year's worth of meat in the freezer. When I can tomatoes, I can enough to last a year. Of course, I buy some things. I probably have five pounds each of dried beans and peas and rice and and such, thirty or forty pounds of flour (I put it in the freezer to keep out the worms), twenty pounds of sugar...I buy in large quantities so that I don't have to go to the store so often. And of course, with the cow and chickens, I have a never-ending supply of milk, butter, eggs, etc. People often tell me how lucky I am to have the life I have...I tell them that luck had nothing to do with it.

Stopped at the local Save More (like a Save-a-Lot). They had corn, string beans and peas on sale for $.39 can. That's about $10 case of 24. Other canned goods were higher, but many still less than or not much over $1.00 can range. Say it averages out to $.59 can. Now say one can lasts for two days for one person and you want a 90-day supply. Seven and one-half cases at about $100.

Since I have been thinking about what is needed around here, now... More TP and COFFEE! If I bought any more food, I wouldn't know where to put it! We haven't eaten all that I put up & dehydrated in 2008. I have to go clean out my 2 fridges & go through all my food to make sure we are eating what we should first. I cook from scratch, so don't buy canned foods for me. DH has a few things he wants, but nothing he couldn't live without. We would be just fine for months IF we bought more TP and COFFEE I am with you there, lonelyfarmgirl!

Then you can separate your items into 'quick grab' stuff for a 'getooutofthehousebeforeitblows' emergency ( They call them BOBs or 72 hr kits). make sure you have things to eat that don't necessarily need to be cooked.....Once you get started down this road - there is no end to the possibilities.

That will equal = 1 well packed bin in my car. Then, I kill 2 birds with 1 stone I like the idea of alternate dry food/canned food storage in another location (like inside a trashcan which could be located in a dry shed or outbuilding). Since I store a lot of dehydrated foods in canning jars, they could also be stored in many different places... as long as they are kept in dry conditions.

I always had the idea of purchasing or sewing a book bag for each person, and putting one round of essentials in each bag. One change of clothes, small first aid kit, a sheet, a towel, poncho, and a few days of dried food, matches, flashlight, plus one of those camping kits where there is a set of dishes all wrapped together.
But, alas, I have never done it...Its on the list.

Then keep them by the door. Replenish supplies once a year.
