how to get water spots from wood floors?

I need some help with this problem...i think the wooden floors have been stained/varnished and thats where the water spots are at from watering a plant
I know after reading the forums and seeing pics of your homes that there are a LOT of wood floors out there...just wondering if anyone ever had this problem and how you fixed it...
i have tried vinegar...have tried wet tea bags so far..spots still there...
does anyone have any tried and true recipes besides sanding and redoing the wood floor??

Thanks for any help...

what kind of finish is it?

polyurethane should never get water spots! lacquer and shellac can but that shouldnt be used on a floors , if its either denatured alchohol will remove water spots. you dont want to rub though as you will remove the finish "pat dont rub". heat may also work for you , Ive seen people use a cloth and iron. but again both these methods risk ruining the finish if care is not used.

It may be shellac - I recentlly put shellac on the floors of my daughter's store, mainly because it dries in about half an hour, no odor, and it's not harmful to pets or people. But....it WILL turn white if water stands on it for awhile. I "googled" removing white spots from furniture and floors, and lots of people opted for the heat method. I haven't tried it yet (floors don't look bad yet) but it might work.
