Old Case Combine

My son has an old Case Combine motor (maybe 1968 or so) that something went wrong with the engine a few days ago - the motor ran backwards after he shut it off, and popped and stumbled and it broke the cam gears. He can't remove the front cover to get at the gears without removing the harmonic balancer (bottom pulley and balancer). It doesn't show a nut to turn, it has a 1/2 inch square showing at the front of the crankshaft, and he can't figure out a way to get that off - he heated it and tried it both ways and it won't come. He doesn't want to destroy any parts.

Does anyone know of a service manual or shop manual for something like this?
He already has an operator's manual, but it doesn't show how to strip anything down. Have any of you had experience with something like this? ANY help would really be appreciated.

Go to ytmag.com
It is an old tractor forum. There should be someone there that could help you.

Good Luck

www.ytmag.com will get you some good advice.

What type of engine is it? Herculies, continental, or? It will get you better answers to tell them (or us) the type of engine.

If I were more familiar with old Case I could probably tell you, but - I'm not sure who's small engine they used back in the day.

Thanks, Randy & Paul. Paul, the engine is a Case engine out of an old Case combine. He does that - puts combine motors in tractors, as well as switching lots of other things around. He called the number for Yesterday's Tractors twice, and got put on hold both times for a long time, so he hasn't tried today. Oh well, we'll see what happens. Too bad there aren't some "old-timers" around when you need them....

What they are trying to say is that equipment manufacturers didnt necessarily make their own engines for every application. I had a '57 Massey Harris 444 with a Continental gas engine for example. Continental made the engine (they made industrial engines), Massey bought it from them. Combines and some other industrial equipment from 60s sometimes even used automotive engines. I know of Ford 300, Chevy 292, and Chrysler 225 engines all having been used in various equipment. Usually with the addition of a belt driven governor.

My guess is damper pulley is pressed on, but I dont know. Somebody here might know if you could post picture of it. Still if totally unfamiliar with it, better to find manual and do it by book or at least use manual as guide if rigging something yourself.

Many times these companies didn't make their own engine of that small a size, and put in a Hurcules, Contenental, or in later years Wisconsin engine. It was cheaper to just buy a few truckloads of them than to tol up a certain size engine.

Perhaps it has an actual Case engine, but then what model?

If you go to the ytmag site & tell the folks there on the discussion forums what model combine & what model engine, I bet you'd have a reply from someone who has worked on that exact engine in about 12 hours. A lot of knowledgable folks on that site. If it is a Case engine - made by Case - then I'd go to the Case discussion area. If it is some other brand of engine (Continental was real popular for such things?????) then I'd go to the combine forum, or one of the other engine related.

The folks that run that site do sell products to help you, but they probably won't know much more than me about it.
