Talked to the VFW board last night.

I meet with the grand poobahs at the VFW board last night. Gave them my proposal and they approved it. Now they present it to the membership for a vote. From what I'm told the members generally rubberstamp what the board proposes. Rent is 200 per month, plus 150 that goes into a fund for repair and upkeep of the equipment. Utilities are included. The only other fixed expense is that they want me to carry some liability insurance. Sounds like I will be opening right after the first of the year.

I'm thinking That I'm going to offer burgers, pulled pork, sandwiches, breakfast food, soup, chile, salads, and a daily special entree. Also garlic bread and cheesey garlic toast. I'm sure that there will be additions and subtractions as I get a feel for it.

Any HTer with a valid drivers license from the state of confusion gets a free entree.

Here are some suggestions from a veteran and VFW member...have some things like pickled eggs, pickled sausages, jerky, etc. for the bar crowd. Chilie with a side of fresh onions and grated cheese is always popular, deep fried battered zucchini sticks and mushrooms are good fare (with Parmesan cheese), dont forget many of the VFW members are older and depending where you are at they may like boiled beef tongue sandwiches, ox tail soup, deep fried fish, SOS for breakfast (and dont forget to put just a hint of burnt on the toast), corned beef hash, ... Another cool thing I have seen done in the summer at VFWs is that you offer raw steaks or chicken for the patrons to purchase and then they grill them themselves on grills you provide. You give them access to various utensils, spices, and sauces and they do their own cooking.

Okay now I am hungry

Oh ...GOOD LUCK!!
You may want to stock piles of homemade type sugar cookies or gingerbread or molasses cookies. Maybe chocolate chip. And a bread pudding, or apple bread pudding is usually a big hit as a simple dessert (as well as easy to make and easy to reheat and CHEAP ) Dessert always goes well with a drink or cup of coffee!

Don't be afraid to experiment once you have time. For example, I mentioned deep fried hotdogs and hamburgers in the other thread. If you have a deep frier make up say three patties in it and three on a grill. Make three hot dogs three ways: deep fried (they will float when well done), boiled and slow roasted. Then conduct a blind tasting test using just the basic meat.

I'd recommend keeping the menu to a maximum number of options. To add something new, you have to drop something else off. Several of GR's KNs programs have featured a bloated menu.

As noted above, food preferences/availability vary by area. An example the beloved brat in WI.
