The effect is a precise analogy to why it is so difficult to get many people to change a strongly held opinion. We are so used to seeing things in context, in the way that we expect and have been taught.

FWIW, the lighting has a significant impact on this type of illusion.

You are correct side lighting will let you see the hollow head but front lighting will let you see it like it is shown. Most every thing we see is from side lighting instead of front lighting.
