Ceiling tile - Leak!

Even after getting a new roof, caulking around the chimney shrank causing a leak that ran down a rafter and soiled the ceiling tile in the TV room. It is a plank style (not square tiles) that is white shaded. Now we can't replace them. Does anyone know how I can paint over these leaks? I tried the Kilz and it made it worse by being brillant white and went on rather thick.

Is there any flashing around the chimney?

try a mixture of 50% bleach and 50% water. Spray it on and let dry. Watch your eyes! You might have to repeat.

Your question was not answered so I will answer it. YES you can PAINT it. I paint the fiber tiles as well as the Styrofoam ones all the time. Just use a oil based stain blocker before you paint or it will bleed through. The water based ones are not worth a crap.IMO

CamM hit on the real problem. The chimney should not be reliant on caulking to stay waterproof. I expect that is was not flashed properly when you had the roof done.

You will have to paint the whole ceiling.

The paint that went on rather thick will look nicer if you sand down the edges of the spot prime. I'd take most of it off with a random orbital sander. Since it didn't work.
Use oil base primer on the sanded down thick stuff that didn't work, feathering your edges out a couple feet, let dry a couple days.
Then prime and paint your ceiling with water base.
That's all asuming that your dealing with smooth wood planks.

If the leak isn't fixed and the area is still wet, then nothing will work long term..

I'm a painter. 95% of the time you can use the bleach trick mentioned by eurycea12 with great results and not have to repaint the ceiling. Just be careful to lightly mist the area, several times over a day, if necessary. I do this all of the time with great results. Personally, I use pure bleach.
