Dealing with mice?

Has anyone tried moth balls to keep mice out of a barn? I heard it's supposed to work. I'm not residing where my barn is right now and want to keep the mice under control. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

Yeah, I'd like to know that one, too!!! I can't keep a cat since I don't live there.
I really hate the thought of D-Con since then I'd have DEAD mice to be found by me. Ugh.

Moth balls will work to keep them away from things in the barn, we use to put moth crystals on our seed corn bags to keep them out of the corn. As they start to weakin over time the mice will get more brave. Thanks Marc

You could also put down little containers with a mix of 50/50 cement and oatmeal. I use lids of peanut butter jars.

I read that too fast. I thought you were mixing cement in peanut butter jar lids, baiting them with oatmeal, and tying the cement sinkers around their neck and drowning them.

(I know...I know...I have an overactive imagination, too.)

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll give the moth balls a try.

Delrio, I take it you've tried this with great success, it is a cheap way to go. I'm going to try this at the same time. Might as well double up on these guys.

Thanks,
Mark

Build a bucket trap with a 5 gallon pail. The mice run up the ramp, cross over to the bait that's on the can, once the mouse is on the can, the can will spin. The mouse falls into the water below. Use something sticky for bait, like peanut butter or a soft cheese spread. You can catch dozens of mice at a time without emptying the bucket. When it's winter, but a little antifreeze in the water.

Putting antifreeze in the water would be a really bad idea if there was any chance at all of a non target animal getting into it since it will kill dogs and cats in a very horrible way. However if you must do this to keep it from freezing there are types of antifreeze on the market that have a really bad taste (standard antifreeze is apparently sweet) that is considered "pet friendly". This would make it a much safer situation IMO.

Or you could use cheap booze in the bucket (not Jack!). 80 proof won't freeze until it's -40ºF. At least the mice will be happy when they drown and I doubt if your cats of dogs would be tempted to drink much of it. Of course, you might find a neighbor passed out in your barn!

Red face

I'd heard the same thing about moth balls and decided to go for the darwin award when I scattered at least a whole box of those balls in my attic. I can see why the mice won't stay.............................us humans didn't want to stay in or near the house either.

Santa, now I see how you are able to deal with all those kids at the mall...

Use a bucket with smooth metal sides and the mice won't be able to climb out.

You have to become at one with the mice. Learn their tactics. Figure out their caste system. Learn the ways of the whisker. Once you accomplish this you will be at ease and peace and will be able to live in harmony with rodent and human! I will send prayers your way and good luck on your mouse ritual.

Mixed with peanut butter. Never failed me yet. Use it in a way that your animals cannot get into it.

If you do not have water sources nearby, carbonated soft drinks in pans works well.
