Have you looked at any Christmas candy?
Has anyone looked at any candy canes or peppermints? Just for the heck of it I was looking at some to satisfy my sweet tooth. All of the big name brands are made in Mexico or China. Lucky for me there are 2 candy factories in Bristol,TN that get peppermints from.

Bob's candy canes are still made in the US. At least Round Lake, MN is the only address. I tried checking their website but it is down.
eta - Spangler's is also made in the US. Those 2 are the only brands I've noticed for sale around here. What other major brands are there?

When was the last time there was a recall on Mexican anything? I don't remember there being any type of recalls from Mexico. I'd rather eat candy from Mexico than from China.

I have noticed over the past few years that more and more candy is being made overseas and in Mexico.
I will not buy the Chinese made candy. Who knows what is in it?
I would like to know what brands are still made in the US. Anyone know?

There's a thread on Homesteading Families about Buying American. 3 sites listed. All you have to do is put in what you want to buy & go from there.
I think we all need to try to buy American as much as possible, so someone can keep his/her job.

We buy our candy canes and other Christmas candy at Nelson's Candies, in Wilton, NH. In fact, we try to make it there while they are making the candy canes. It's kindo of fun watching them manipulate these long sugar/corn syrup ropes.

Other than the occasional dark chocolate bar imported from Austria at Aldis, I dont buy candy. And I have bought my 4 bags of filberts in the shell to celebrate Hogswatch, so thats that, wont be going to town again until January unless I need a part for something.
I swear even the hard peppermint candy doesnt taste right anymore. Suppose they figured how to make it with high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavoring. I hate modern high profit foods.

Aack! Thanks for the heads up on this, Charles. I'm going in to check the stocking stuffer candy canes I got the other day, and if they're made in China, they're in the garbage. Where will this all end? If we all pass on foreign made things maybe, but people are scarfing up those cheap jeans and clothes at Wal-mart like there are not going to be any more made. How do you get the general public to stop buying this junk? Jan in Co

My MIL gave us some candy canes from China.
My daughter and I won't eat them!
Just 'cause they kill a couple of people over there- I see no consolation if my daughter gets ill!

Holy Moly!
I just realized my kid's started chewing gum made in Columbia! She trotted off for a four and a half mile walk dragging the poor dog!
She had already helped me cut down the neighbors' tree!!
What the heck are in those Chiclets?!?!?!
LOL!

I stopped by the local DG store intending to pick up some hard candy; cinnamon discs and peppermints. They were both marked made in Argentina. I did find some old fashioned
filled hard candy that was made in the USA. That is what I came home with. Dont trust the out of country processed food at all. I now look at all labels carefully.

Look at the box of Bob's and Spangler's, both say made in Mexico, so does the Farley's and Sather's. Just because the company headquarters is in the US doesn't mean they make it here. I looked at all of the major brands.
Ratliff Candy Co. is one brand made in Bristol,TN. I can't remember the other company name but it's sold as Red Brand candy sticks in the supermarkets.

I don't know how I missed that - big bold letters: Product of Mexico! I don't have a box of Spanglers, the website mentioned having a factory in Ohio, I think. Think they'd lie? Dumb question.
When I've had enough coffee to really wake up, I think I'll write to Bobs & tell them to bring my favorite candy cane back to the States.
