Rats ate the toilet paper in Out House!

How do you keep the toilet paper safe in the Out House? We have always just put it in a plastic baggie but last week the rats or mice ate through two baggie. Now, we found a small wood box with lid and have the toilet paper in the box. We did write "toilet paper" on the wood lid so that City Folks will know where to find the paper.

How do you keep rats from eating the toilet paper?

what if you hung it from a string with a disc above it it(like how you deter squirrels) I can see this being a fun outsmart the rat game

Actually, we use a metal can that poppy-cock or caramel corn came in. It is a perfect size for a TP roll...not too big, not too small...and it has a metal lid!

My thought is--how are they getting in? Stop their entry and problem solved. Never knew the one on our family farm to ever have a problem like that.

Hey.

You need one of those metal encased hanging tp holders like the state rest stops have...you and the rats both won't be able to get to the tp;-)

Install a toilet in the house like a civilized person.

Just kidding!!! DW was raised with an outhouse and would still prefer it over having to clean our bathroom!!!

Are they eating the paper or using it for bedding?

Ours is in a plastic coffee can.
No trouble so far...

My mom used to suspend the spares from a piece of #9 wire, hanging from the roof.

The metal coffee can is a good idea. I better switch to something metal or I bet they are going to eat my wood box. I like that little box and so I am off to the barn to find a metal can.

We cannot close up the cracks since it is a rustic outside Out House for.......for when we are outside! If we went and closed up the rough cracks then it would not be Cute any more and for heavens sake.....we must have a Cute Out House!

Hanging it from a wire is a good idea too.

Whodunit: We do have a toilet inside the house too but when we are outside, it is faster to just use the Out House. Plus, when men come around that we do not know (like the cute but lazy cement pad guy last week) then we send them to the Out House and that keeps them OUT of my house!

OK off to find metal cans

My TP is kept in a metal coffee can with a plastic lid. Never have had them get into the can yet but I only have mice in the out house not the bigger rats.

I would use the metal coffee can, and some bait blocks scattered around the outhouse.

Get a bucket, put enough water in it that a rat will drown in it, put the roll of toilet paper on a wire running across the top of the bucket. The rats try to get to the toilet paper, fall off the wire into the bucket and drown.

Rats

Your title says Rats. How do you know it was rats? Might have been Mice, or Chipmonks (rats wearing a TUX) or even birds. Ain't nature grand?

Now here is how to deal with the problem.

Once upon a time in the United States there were jobs that workers went to on a regular basis. Being prepared to stay all day (or Night) they usually took a lunch with them. The container commonly used for this was called a "Lunch Box". Now way back in the olden days (the '60's according to my adult children) they made lunch boxes out of metal, immagine that. Some were even made out of aluminum so they would not rust.

I found one of these at a "yard sale" for $1. A good buy. It holds 2 rolls of toilet paper, with two latches on the front and the "Box" also has a handle on top. There are other uses for this "Box" as well. I keep a couple of candles and a lighter in the bottom of mine.

edcopp: I like the idea of the metal lunch box! Good idea.

I did not find a metal can at the barn so for now I have to leave the wood box out there but I am on the search for metal lunch box or coffee can now. Thanks everyone!

geo in mi: I will be sure to ask the Man-with-a-Tractor who is coming to help me tomorrow to be sure and "cut the cheese" more often! Now.....I wonder if he will add that to my bill?

You could always keep the toilet paper in the house and take it out with you when you go.
