16 X 16 cabin slideshow

I have been designing a 16x16 cabin for someone that wants to go off grid using my plans. Here is the slide show if interested:

Post a video when you build one.

Think it would be better to be posting a slideshow on your real construction rather than the simple graphics. Include pictures like this, taken while I was putting the roof on the cabin I designed.

Then you can include real-world details like what size rafters to use with what the expected snow load is, or how many feet of chimney pipe your stove will need to be up to code. Real information that people need when they're building a real cabin.

Hmmm, if I'm not mistaken, he has posted a YouTube video of the cabin he built, along with others dealing with off grid living. In fact, they were very good ones.

Thumbs up

Isn't SketchUp awesome!!!, I am assuming that is what you used for your design work.

I would consider adding windows to the sides that don't currently have them to aid cross flow ventilation, especially since it will be off grid. I don't think I would try to fit a six person dining table either.

Very nice job though and a good overall design.

Happy thanksgiving, Randy

Sorry to be so long in responding guys!

I was out of town visiting the kids for the holidays.

I will try to respond to all questions in this post to conserve space.

First I should let you know that the video is just a design idea based on my own 14x14 solar cabin to show how it could be done. I included details only to give the design perspective and these could be easily changed to fit other peoples needs.

For information on my 14x4 cabin and all systems here is the link and a picture below:

http://www.youtube.com/solarcabin

Before someone accuses me of spamming there is links to my webpage on that youtube site but the videos presented are 100% free for ideas.

" All I saw was a very basic cartoon animation. Did I miss something?"

This is a design for a home and not step by step plans and is intended to show how a small basic cabin can be turned into a nice home. It is based on my 14x14 cabin which I designed and built for under $2000 and you can see that in the link posted above and the pic below. I am an architectural draftsman and off grid home designer so I make designs like these to help people visualize the house before they commit to building it.

"Isn't SketchUp awesome!!!, I am assuming that is what you used for your design work.

Yes sketchup is a great program for designing homes and was used in this project. I intentionally left out windows except in the front because proper window placement and house orientation has to be considered carefully when building a home. Windows let heat in and heat out so I recommend few windows on north, east and west sides.

"Think it would be better to be posting a slideshow on your real construction rather than the simple graphics. Include pictures like this, taken while I was putting the roof on the cabin I designed."

Thats a nice looking cabin! There are videos of my 14x14 on the youtube link above and many customer built homes from my designs on my website. I design and build off grid homes for people and I use these videos to help people visualize the project before committing to build. Thats a pic of my cabin below!

I have two more design videos for those interested:

20 X 20 A frame home

Straw bale and shipping container home

Thanks for posting this.

I kinda like the design process.
I find that doing it on paper, (or computer), saves a lot of planning errors while building.
Building "small" is trully an art, how to fit all the STUFF we get used to into a small area.

Who would guess that adding flooring would raise the floor enough that a standard height table (30") can't be put in front of the swing windows and have them open.
Ask me how I know.........

P.S. I find my self carring a 8 ft tape in my pocket.....just to see if stuff would fit in a small space.

Hi Hunter63,

Yup designing a small home that has everything you need takes some real work and I designed 50 cabins before deciding on the one I built.

Sketchup id free from google and is excellent for people that want to tinker with home and shed designs and what I used in the videos.

http://sketchup.google.com/product/gsu.html

I used recycled rv sink, stove, water tank, cabinets, and lights for the cabin because they are smaller and fit my needs.

The kitchen has a rollaway butcher block counter with a leaf so I can spread things out for cooking.

The shower is a small corner unit and my washer and dryer are stacked up rights. Small OD water heater.

The couch is full size futon for guests and I have a queen size bed and full office upstairs.

So considering I had less than 400 sqft to work with I got everything I needed at a small price.

When you think about it the largest RV alowwed on the road is 10x40 and has narrow walkways around stuff and people live year round in these. I have more open room than an RV, hotel room, and a lot of NY apartments!

Here are a few pics of inside:

Nice place, I did not see mention or see in the photos, a refrigerator.
I am so glad to see you put a decent front porch on it.

Thanks Angie!

The porch us a must have for a cabin. I enclose the porch in plastic in winter to create a solar porch that helps heat the house and in summer it shades the front of the cabin and the breezes that blow in. I also store my batteries for solar on the porch to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer and same for generator.

Here is the pic of the fridge. It is a Danby propane model and the thing on top is a wonderwasher used for small loads:

Thanks for the frig and washer photo. I've come to the conclusion that you have as much working counter space as this mobile home that I live in.
Congratulations.

I like your uses for the porch.
