gun oil
Anybody have a favorite ? is one better than another for longer storage (over winter) and another better for shorter term? What about a good synthetic motor oil? Mike

I'm a Rem-oil fan.
A good cheap alternative is transformer oil.

I use Rem-Oil too.
I'm having a hard time finding the Remington spray cleaner called, "Rem Action Cleaner." I wonder if them stopped making it?

my son and daughter shoot service rifle comp. (garand, 1903, carbine and lots and lots of AR's, i use synt. motor oil on the ar's (its about the right viscosity and we use a lot of it) and for "long term" storage. rem oil is very thin buts its good. i have a gallon of Brownells oil which i favor. i think its all good.
years ago i found a long term protectorite that sprayed on and left a slightly waxy covering...it was great for long term storage,,,,(i have guns i have not fired for 15 years that still have the covering on them.) can't remember its name,,,but if i ever smell it again i will know it.....

I second Break Free CLP. It is a really good product. Also G96 Gun Treatment is good if you can't find Break Free.

I avoid penetrating oil such as wd40. A gun person told me a while back that if you get too much on a gun, it penetrates bullets creating misfires.

It would have to be a lot...we routinely soak live rounds in WD40 to render the primers inert before breaking them down...

I use a high grade oil made for use in mechanical watches for my handguns and heavier clock oil on rifles and shotguns. Seems to work very well.

I'll second the Ed's Red. It is a great bore cleaner and cheap to make.
Try it you'll like it!

In the field, I carry Remington Gun Oil also....
While here at my Dad's in Michigan on vacation, I am using Hoppe's gun oil on my CCW weapon that is at least 20 years old. Works just fine for my sister, brother and myself and our weapons, after an afternoon at the indoor gun range the other day.
Of course in past I had acquired several cases each of the Military issued gun oil and powder solvent in the smaller OD green cans.. I am still using it these days at home, a couple of decades later..

Various oils, here.
Hoppes, Outers, Rem-oil, and military gun oil in the green plastic bottles.....
Over the years. Whatever was handy.
Right now I have some Hoppe's and Rem-oil on hand.
Gun-scrubber in aerosol cans or Brake cleaner.........good for cleaning them up.

And if you add the lanolin it makes a good rust preventive.
