Dang coyotes!!!!!!!!
Is there such a thing as a coyote hunter?? If so, where can I find one?? We don't own any guns, unfortunately, sure wish we did. They are HORRIBLE here, very, very bold & big, and I believe they got my little orange Pomeranian on Wednesday morning. I was dumb & forgot to bring him in after potty time, as my son's therapists all came for a review meeting. I have put up fliers, contacted the shelter, local radio station that broadcasts lost pets for ya, the vets, etc. I am just heartbroken, & feel so guilty.
Last night, there was one out in the yard, barking just like a dog, the only way I knew it WASN'T was it would lapse into yipping & howling after a while. I KNOW it was trying to lure out my Labradoodle & the little GSD mix pup I found abandoned the other day. Me screaming & cussing & DH setting off fireworks on the front porch didn't phase that Spawn of Satan ONE BIT, he just kept barking, just on the other side of the truck. The one big male I saw in my yard last month was about as big as a GSD.
Finally DH took the dogs out to the pen, figured they'd be OK out there. This morning, there was a HOLE DUG on the OUTSIDE of the dog pen that was NOT there yesterday!! I am thinking they now have a taste for dogs, as they have never been this bold before! I am scared to death to let my 6 year old son outside. We live in the middle of very thick woods, lots of hills, next to a campground/nature preserve.
Any ideas who I might contact for help? We just don't have the $$ to go buy a gun at present.

Contact Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Pretty busy time of year for them since hunting is in full swing but expect they would still spare some time to visit about the problem.

Can you put an ad on Craigslist? That's what I'd do if I didn't shoot them myself......

There's a pack of them in the woods/field behind our property too; we heard them yapping tonight, driving our dogs crazy. Fortunately there's a 6' fence, but we still ought to be careful. I'm so sorry about your dog.

There are usually poeple who you can get in touch with through a craigslist ad, who are always looking for a place to varmint hunt. If you go that route, dont just let first person who responds come out to your place and shoot, actually talk to them about safety, who is allowed, and point out which directions they are allowed to shoot. Usually, at least two guys will come out together. Make sure they will remove the bodies as well.

On what area of Craigslist should I put an ad? I blame myself for my little Wolfie, as I knew the coyotes are horrible here. I was just so distracted that morning, & concentrating on my son's therapists (4) all coming for a review meeting, I just forgot.
Little Wolfie wasn't afraid of anything, tough little guy. Last night when they were barking/howling, my Labradoodle's eyes were just WILD.... he just FROZE, and his eyes glazed over, was really freaky. He always barks when he hears other dogs barking in the distance, not last night. His fur stood up on his neck, & he just stared at me, really erie.

Actually there are two branches in the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department unless things have changed fairly recently. The Wildlife officers deal with hunters, violations of hunting laws, wild animals, etc. They are sort of considered as the law enforcement branch of KWPD. The Parks officers patrol within the state parks, check boating permits, overnight registration & permits, and I think some even do mowing and other maintenance duties within the parks. I think either can write folk up for violations but pretty well stick more to their general duties.
Yes they patrol all areas and not just state parks. They would generally patrol from roadways or waterways unless there was serious obvious violation on private property. As with any law enforcement officer they can pretty much go anywhere.
My brother, in the past, has done some nuisance bird control in farm fields as just one example of how KWPD can help to control critter damage.

I know you have most likely been told this many times, but you need a gun. No telling when one might be needed for many reasons. It doesn't need be anything fancy, just a 22 would be better than nothing. I don't know what we would do here without one. Good luck getting rid of those varmits. Sam

Last year we hired a guy who actually called them - his fee was the pelts. Hubby met him at the gun shop. Too bad he didn't get any.
Put an ad up at your local feed store or better yet ask them. They may know someone in your area.
Also wanted to mention if they are in the woods behind your place, most likely they are at your place at night too. They have quite a large area that they roam looking for food or pets left outside. You and yours are not safe just because you haven't heard them within your property lines. Get a gun.
Almost 2 years ago to the day some coyotes got my black lab mix - During the day! (he survived barely) They are mostly nocturnal but if they are hungry enough, they will come out during the day. I see them down at the pond getting drinks of water every so often. Again, get a gun. And contact someone who knows how to call them.

Remember you can't shoot within 500 ft of a home - may be different where you live. Check your laws.
Ya gotta fence your property! Kill the coyotes and you'll have lots more rabbits eating your garden and more rats too. Your choice. I decided to fence & let the coyotes run, sing and eat the other critters.
Sorry about your dog, Poms are so cute.

I sent an email to KS W & P, will wait & see if they get back to me. If not, will see if I can find somebody local. I have seen them in the yard during the day, like I said there was a big male in the driveway one day ,almost as big as a German shepherd. Have seen them many times during the day, in the yard, in the woods by the house, trotting down the middle of the road. Sure didn't act scared of me one bit! Fencing isn't an option, as we rent.

Your best option is to find a knowledgable trapper in your area. Coyotes are very easily educated and letting a novice hunter or trapper attempt to take care og the problem will most often only educate the coyotes and make it harder for the next guy to trap them. Try checking out Trapperman.com and you may find a trapper in your area willing to help.

Here in IL we actually HUNT coyotes, it's a lot of fun running the dogs, but some snot nosed land owners kinda limits where we can run the dogs. It is great fun chasing the dogs, using radio trackers, listening to the barks, talking on the radio.
Exciting and fun, sometimes the coyotes will even put up a fight with our dogs!

The coyotes seem worse this year. We've always heard a few in the woods, but this summer we lost 3 cats - most likely to coyotes.
My dh saw what he said was a dog, but he can't tell a dog from a coyote. I've seen the tracks, but can't tell if they are dog or coyote. Is there a website that shows the difference?
Kstornado - you're right not to let your child out alone. An adult hiker in Canada was killed by 2 coyotes not long ago.

Do a google search for a site called preditor(s/p) masters dot com. There are youte hunters in every state of the UNION I believe there. Just join and ask for a few hunters from your state to PM you about being able to hunt your property. Some do charge for the service but many do it just for the sport.
