If the lid is not sealed air tight the water will all run out. The pan you set it in must not leak, and come above the hole in the side of the bucket. How did you fill the bucket? If you calk the lid so it is air tight, then turn the bucket upside down and fill it through the hole you made in the side, you can flip it over quickly into your drinking pan and it will work. If not I will cancel my fee.

Do you get Countryside Magazine? The nov/Dec issue has a great idea for a cheap, easy chicken waterer. I don't have it in front of me, but he used a 5 gallon bucket too.

Seal the hole you now have. Discard the lid and place the hole in the side of the bucket near the open end. Fill the bucket with water and place the larger pan on top of the bucket. Now invert the whole apparatus .

Why not just start over and do it the easy way. Put two of these in the bottom of a 5 gal plastic bucket and hang from a chain.

Works great, no leaks and hassle free.

Plowjockey, do those nipple waterers work like Lixit valves? We've used the Lixits on a regular pressurized water system but never on a bucket. We bought several at an auction for next to nothing and still have several. Thanks.

Not sure. These are basically a stopper, that uses water pressure to seal. No springs. The chickens just peck at it and a dribble of water runs in their beaks.

These can be used on pressureized system, but the pressure rating is pretty low, so it probably why they work with a bucket.

Give the lixit a try and see if the hens can get water from them.

I'll never use a gravity type poultry waterer ever again.

Good luck.

Thanks, Plowjockey. I had a pet hen who used the Lixits in the barn all the time. I'll have to give this a try.
