advice on flooring

We have to redo the floors in the dining room, utility room and bathroom due to them being really weak. We live in an old farmhouse and the old part of the house is just fine,it is the added on rooms that need help. Someone did a poor job years ago. We already have the subflooring bought but what would be the best to put down in these rooms? I want something that we can do ourselves, something durable and will take moisture. We will be using the same flooring in all the rooms and they are connected by a 100 year old or so pine floor. So want to keep with something that goes with the house. Thanks

I may not understand what you mean by weak floors. If they are really weak it would be the floor joists that are the cause. What you put on for the final covering depends a lot on your budget. Like you say whatever you get needs to be waterproof. <>UNK

We have an old farm house in Missouri that needs new flooring in the kitchen and dining area and we have decided on 12" square linoleum floor tiles. They are easy to lay and are virtually indestructible. We toured several old houses in the area and many had this old style tile and you can even do patterns if you want.

We will have to put down underlayment and some floor leveler but for us it will be the quickest, easiest, and most cost effective method to make a good looking floor in keeping with the age of the house (1945).

Our neighbors have beautiful wood flooring. They used car siding. It wasn't meant for floors but, my, it's gorgeous stuff. It's rather rustic in nature but with an old farm house and old pine flooring, that might be a nice compliment.

If your floors are weak you are going to have to have someone check the subfloor and the joists that support them too before laying any floors.

I guess I should have explained myself better because I left out a lot. We did get the dining room done and had to totally gut the floor. We were down to nothing but the foundation and a bare hole. They had put the joists 24 inches or further apart and put pressed board over it. Also the sill was rotten,so we just started over with an all new sill, floor joists 16 inches apart and then a support through the middle underneath also and ¾ inch tongue and groove subfloor. Now I'm trying to figure out what would work the best on top. We still have the utility room and bathroom to do and I know we are looking at the same, just clear it all out and put in new because it is in such bad shape. So that will be good but would like to know about finishing it. Thanks for all the great advice.Dawn
