If you get an efficient enough one, you'll qualify for some tax credits. I think for heat pumps it's 30% of the cost as a credit. Check the rules to see how efficient it needs to be and make sure you get one that meets the requirements.

I just helped someone get one on their local craigslist for about 1/3 of what the AC companies were charging. That is far better than any tax credit.

I don't like forced hot air type heat. If starting from scratch especially if I had a basement I would go with circulated water.

My understanding that if you live in town heat pumps are ok . Friend outside of town don't have a high opinion of heat pumps.

Not sure how being in town or out of town would affect the operation of a heat pump. In generally they're used more in mild climates... depending on where in IN it could be suitable. In northern IN I don't think I'd want to have one, or if I did I would want gas backup heat not electric strip backup.

The tax credits will apply to a self-installed unit as well, it doesn't have to be installed by an HVAC outfit. Of course for a heat pump you'll most likely need a pro to charge the system at least.
