Kelly, I don't know about dodging creditors, but I would do everything in my power to not fall behind in the future. You never know when a greater difficulty will hit and having a credit rating that allows you to get money in an emergency is worth something.

Please join us on the tightwad tips thread to get new ideas on how to live on very little. It CAN be done.

I'd live on rice and beans for now and very cheap meals made from dollar store ingredients. Don't use any electricity that you don't have to. That includes lights, dryer. Wash can be done in a five gallon bucket with a clean plunger. Roll up and step on the clothes in the bathtub to squeeze out excess water. Hang dry.

No moves, rental, beer, cigarettes, etc. until you are sure you can make your payments. Go to bed and rise with the sun to eliminate using lights.

Of course the best way to stop the calls is to pay off the debt entirely. Don't use the cards again until you have done this.

If you tell us your particulars on the tightwad tips thread we can help you with specific ideas for your situation.

you can tell them to put all further contact in writing. There's a law stating they must agree with your wishes to not call you.

They are also limited on how many times they can call you . Up to 6 times a day.

In the future, always contact creditors BEFORE you fall behind in your payments. Many will waive a couple of months' payments, lower your interest rate and/or lower your minimum payments.

For now, check your state's laws regarding creditor contact. As TexasArtist said, there are laws that apply to the manner in which creditors are allowed to contact you.

I too had Chase for a while. Due to family issues I also got behind. No matter what I said, or spoke to (supervisor) made any difference. Letters didn't help either with Chase. I mean, you can't get blood out of a stone.

The only thing that saved me from those phone calls was caller ID. If your new phone number is unlisted, that'll help. If you can afford it, maybe caller ID will also help temporarily.

I know it doesn't look good on your credit to totally cancel credit cards, but I cancelled Chase's as they were so awful when I was going through a hard time even though I'd had all my accounts with them and was never late.

Sometimes things happen unexpectedly that you have no control over. Just do what you promised and go on with your life. Those calls are more about them than about you.

You took and used their money for yourself. Pay it back on time or don't borrow again. Simple as that.
Or better yet. Let me borrow a couple of pay checks from you with a promise of paying it back and then change my number to a private no., put a lock on my front gate and never answer your calls or letters. How would you feel and what would you do about it. Be responsible for your own actions and take accountability for them or the rest of us will have to pay for your lack of it.
If you steal from the grocery store the prices go up for the rest of us that pay for our items. I am sorry but I don't have any sympathy for you.

what my friend tells his creditors that were calling them was;

" Listen, I put all my bills in a hat each month, I pull bills out of the hat and pay what comes out until I have no more money. If you keep bothering me, I will take your bill right out of the hat..lol"""

did I miss something? Where did the op say they used the money on themselves? Also they didn't say they didn't plan on paying it back. They said they fell behind a little and were trying to get back on their feet. Good greif have some compassion next time. Sometimes unexpected things happen. May your same kind words come back to bite you on the fanny.

Due to a scheduling foul up and general absent mindedness, we sent a late payment to Chase.

They sent a notice that our rates would be raised.

My wife called and talked with a representative. They said that they understood, and our record was good. So, they lowered our rate back down to where it was and even waived the late fee.

I just wanted to point out that they're not always bad.

My Bank of America card, on the other hand, raised the rate to above 20 percent. I called and asked if there might be a way it could be lowered given that I had held the card (it hasn't always been owned by BoA) and made payments on time for more than 20 years. The rep said, "No." I used my wife's tip of asking for a supervisor. The rep said that there wasn't one available and I could call back later, but the answer would still almost definitely be no.

The balance is being transferred off that card.

Something tells me it's not that simple, otherwise that's what would have been done by now, right? But you're right. If no one borrowed, or borrowed and paid right back, this would never be an issue.

However, that does nothing to help in the here and now.

Kellyandroger - I have felt your pain (not the heart attack, the bills) and it's hard and frustrating. Not gonna specifically comment since these credit threads can get carried away.. just best of luck and recovery of health to ya!

On the other hand - Mid Tn Mama was the first post to your thread. Let me just give an endorsement. Please take her advice and make yourself a regular on the "tightwads" thread.

I don't care if one is rich or poor, it is invaluable to at least have the knowledge to get by on little or nothing. Mid Tn Mama has some of the most impressive, creative, intelligent tips to add!!!

Regardless of your credit outcome, you will be glad you checked it out! And I bet you'll discover you have some stuff to offer the thread too!

One thing that MIGHT work is answer the phone and tell for legal purposes you need to inform them the phone call is being recorded and there will be no warning beep. Lots of time once you say that they will hang up. If they tell you they do not want the call recorded tell them the call WILL be recorded and if they wish not to be on tape they need to hang up and hang up now.

Of course they may not care because they are recorded all the time anyway.

Okay I know it a serious subject... but just for the devilment of it. When a creditor calls with a demand of payment, say (in a computer generated type of voice) "I am sorry, but your request for payment has been denied. You may apply again in three months!"
On a serious note, I think the reason they are hounding you so bad is that you ONLY owe 200.00. Its such a small amount, they figure you're an easy one to collect on. You could send them a check for one dollar? I think they are required to accept it. And go on and pay them in November when you can. Then do as all the others have posted. Don't use credit cards, for this reason. Its not worth it.

I understand...I really...really do. I have also fell on hard times and had those dreadful calls...I HATE THEM...they will call until the payment is made.

On the other hand I just wanted to say that my mom and my sister has fell on hard times too...they changed their number to unlisted and unpublished...so what did the creditors do...they found the next of kin number...they are good at that...that would be ME! I can't change my number as my number is a business number...so I constantly have to check the ID to see if it is a legit call or one of the 888-866-877 ect numbers...I just wanted to warn you as they will call your relatives.

I hope you feel better soon.

Please, someone, anyone, explain to me why so many think they don't have to pay their bills especially their credit card and it is ok.
Doesn't seem to me that you are working it out when you change your phone to a private number just so you don't have to speak to bill collectors.
They want their money just as you would if you lent money to someone with an agreement of it being paid back.

noone has said to not pay the bill. What has been said is there is a rough patch right now and the cc co. is refusing to listen. Op stated when things are better in nov. they'll get right back on track.
