what makes this noise

What ever this thing is. It noise comes in a big burst then trails off like a whistle. It sounds kinda like COOOOOOOOOOwwwwwwww OOOOOOOOOOOowwwwwwwww.
This thing used to be down in the revine. I know its a night time creature. About two or three weeks ago it came up out of the ravine and was up around the chicken house and goat sleeping area. It didn't harm anything but I'm not sure if I scared it off or it happen to be leaving when I went out. The animals are to the left of my house and this thing was headed to the right towards the ravine. I caught it in the light of my flashlight and it turned and challanged me. It was about the height of a large coon, fox, or bobcat. I couldn't make out what it was cause it's eyes were reflecting back at me. When it turned at me with a challenge I shot at it. Missed it but it went back down to the ravine and hasn't been back since.
Oh and the noise was like a husky shrill whistle. Almost if someone has had a larengytis and tried to scream.
I don't beleive this thing to be a mountain loin. I've heard one of them cause we have one in the area. Plus the sort of sighting.

Any ideas?

I don't think so. I've seen and heard the coyotes in the area. This thing was much shorter then a coyote. I'm thinking after looking at the pics it might be that coatimundi thing.

mmmm noooo I'm thinking this guy is to short. I think the coatimundi is our suspect. He seems to be about the right height. If I'm remember right the face I could kind make out was chubby rounded like this coatimundi and it had sort of a snout of a fox. That's why it's so confusing. The little pest! Only thing I wonder about is ,this web site says it make the chatter of a squirrell raccon type. The noise I hear certainly wasn't. Kinda sent chills up my spine to hear it!!!

Oh, they make the sound you describe. Yes they do! They kept me awake many nights in southern Arizona. The 2 critters (coatimundi and the ringtail) are closely related.

I am sure not finding a nice audio track anywhere though.

Coati's are native to Texas. They have some in the native animal zoo in Victoria, Texas.

Chitter sound:

so the coatimundi is probably the winner then? Hmmm should I be excited or nervous for my animals? I see it say they like eggs. Well I have the 12 chickens and I've been getting 6 -9 eggs a day. Maybe some of the girls are laying out in the pasture and that's what drew it up outta the ravine? I also noticed the like rocky treed area. That describes this area perfectly. There's a few folks around that have animal troughs so it'd would have plenty of water to get.

Texas Artist, I dunno about if they will get your birds. I didn't own any poultry when I lived in coatimundi territory. Maybe some of these other Texan HTers will answer to that.

Papa Ron, welcome to HT.

The article says it's a carnivore. If it's related to the racoon, I wonder if it wouldn't kill a chicken. It would sure go after the eggs, wouldn't it?

Where in Texas are you? We're outside of Austin (far north), would prefer this animal habitates other parts than mine.
