Different varieties of mosquitos

This weekend I was down at my new piece of land to dig some fencepost holes. (It's right at the Louisiana/Arkansas line.) Well, there were some HUGE mosquitos biting me. I haven't seen any mosquitos like that, here where I currently live (about 3 hrs north of there.) These mosquitos were drinking blood because when I swatted/squashed them, blood would come out of them. So I know they were really mosquitos. I could feel them biting, and see the "needle" in my skin when they were getting my blood. There were just literally swarms of them, covering me in a cloud.

Anyway, I thought that I would be covered in welts last nite and today. But not one bite spot is showing anywhere. No itching. I can't figure it out.

When I am bitten by local mosquitos, it leaves a big itchy bothersome bump for a week. Oh and the local ones are smaller and more agile. They can be difficult to swat.

So I guess my question is, why would one variety of mosquito cause such misery, while another variety doesn't?

AG are they striped? The tiger mosq? I expect you are not YET allergic to them- that after a few weeks exposure to them you will start reacting.

Bummer for you AG if Jenn is right. I thought you were going to be lucky with jumbo, non itchy buggers.

Yes, they seem to be kinda brown/yellow striped, instead of just solid grey like the ones around here.
Why will I gain an allergy to them later?
Thanks for your help.

it's odd you brought this up. when i was a kid, i only remember one variety of mosquito. that would be the "normal" grayish bugger. a decade or so ago, i began seeing the tiger mosquito. they are larger and more aggressive. yesterday i went out for the first day of archery season. the skeeters were very bad. i saw a third type, or maybe one of the other two i know of in a different part of it's life cycle. i saw short fat ones. they were thick like the tigers, but they were shorter. they looked kind of funny. my nephew was out hunting too and he saw them as well.
