Frozen lamb from 2006- still ok?

We had some lambs butchered in 06 and they've been frozen ever since. In your opinion, are these still ok? I am thinking probably yes but looking for opinions. Of course everything in a google search says to throw it out after a year I am looking for some "real people" thoughts

Thanks!

I think it would depend on how it was wrapped in the freezer. Double wrapped from the butcher or vacuum packed might be OK. Anything less would be thrown out or fed to the dogs. I too am interested in what some of the others have to say also.

If it has been kept frozen it should be ok. I just cook it and if it taste good eat it . Meat that has been out thawed to long is more to worry about . I am eating meat that some one gave to me from 2002 that was for the dog and it looked to good for him so I am eating it . Freezer burn meat is just spots dehydrated but is still edible and can be soaked or marinated up to be good tasting . My mother said if you are hungry you will eat .

It was processed at a butcher and is wrapped in plastic, white butcher paper and then is in a freezer bag. I had some shanks that I stuck in the crock pot frozen. I also have a bunch of brats and some stew meat.

It won't be bad for you to eat it, it just might not taste very good. I would thaw some out and see what I thought.

Yup. Thaw it. Look for the white discoloration, and smell it. If it is OK the look and smell will be normal.

If it has not had periods where it thawed out, it should be ok. At least I have eaten meat close to that in age. And lived to tell about it. If you cook it well, not much there to do you damage.
The Brats wold depend on whether commercial or home- any meat that is ground is much more likely to have had some bacteria ground in with it.
Do let us know how it goes. If you don't post later, I may have to rethink my position on this issue.

I just ate some lamb I butchered in early 2007. I did it in the slow cooker and it was delicious... I always vacuum pack mine.

Once it's thawed, smell it. Sometimes fat turns rancid in the freezer. If you have just some small spots of freezer burn, trim it off before cooking. The larger the cuts, the more likely it's still OK. Ground meat, stew meat isn't likely to still be good after that much time has passed. I've had ground venison/beef combo go rancid in less than a year - commercially packed at a vension processing place. Freezer set to zero, btw.

Hmmm, maybe it went bad before it was frozen, or the beef was bad, or you had a thaw out you didn't know about? Dunno, but we are eating 2006 ground vinison stored in ziplocks, tastes fine to me!
