Venting an underground root cellar?

Has anybody found found what they feel the best venting system? I'd like to pick the materials up ASAP, as pouring could be any day at this point.

Materials, and even a cap(?) to keep rodents/weather out? What sort of pipe? Plastic or metal? Some pics suggest the vent should have a significant elbow to keep rain out, others have a cap like a chimney.

And for snowy conditions, should these vents protrude above the expected snow depth? These things don't seem to be in the Bubel book, unless I am missing it...

And something I forgot to mention- an air shut-off? If it's really cold out, it would be required to ---- off that vent to keep produce from freezing solid...

I used 3" PVC for both inlet and outlet
They both are fitted with screw on/off caps at the outside of house
I found some 1/2" square page wire type stuff that i cut round to fit inside the pipes to keep pests out, so far so good.

Wouldn't it be a good set up to have a Large PVC pipe running way below frost depth away from the cellar at least 100 feet for the air inlet. Have a PVC pipe about 4 inches diameter out the top of the cellar above snow depth. Put to elbows on top to turn the opening down. Cover the end with screen. The inlet pipe would need a screened opening at the out end protected from snow cover with a plastic barrel with several holes cut in one side.
The incoming air would be brought to the temperature of the ground as it travels toward the cellar. Being close to underground temp is what a cellar should be. A damper needs to be on the bottom of the outlet to control air flow.
Anyone think this system would work or am I overlooking important factors? <>UNK
