Time to clean the freezer = dog food (pic)

Well, autumn is coming. Time to clean and reorganize the freezers for this year's steer and hog. Just thought I'd share a dog food recipe that is good for my dogs, economical, and prevents waste of home grown meats and veges that need to be used.

I was a vet tech for 12 years and my vet gave me this very simple recipe for my dogs. They love it and do so well on it. Just like human processed food, pet foods have all sorts of nasty things in them. They can get fat on this, so a small serving is all they need (I have small, very active dogs). They get some kibble for a munchie and dental health (I also brush their teeth).

The recipe is 1/3 meat, 1/3 cooked rice and 1/3 vegetables (no potatoes).

This time I had 12 pounds of ground goat meat to use. Added water and rice and cooked in the crockpot. Then added a mix of peas and carrots for the veges. Put it through the pressure cooker (can also be frozen). I take all the same care when canning this as I do our own food. It made 14 quarts.

Excellent idea! I also add rice to meat and veggies like carrots and green beans, though I don't do canning it goes in containers for freezing. Raising turkeys and adding some venison to the diet also is very good for my dogs. I also add eggs to the mix on cooking up the batch since my layer flock often produces surplus that never goes to waste.

Thank you. It's my favorite thing in the house. I'd give up all the other appliances before I'd give up my cookstove!
